Fusilli: I know I was comfortably the underdog, but at least I could have made him work for it! After risky opening play, 12...Nbd7 is just a concession. And, sadly, I did not even see the strength of 16.Qa4 when I played the blunder 15...Re8. The good move was 15...Rd8, although I was in very bad shape already.

keypusher: Always frustrating to play less than your best against a strong opponent. I've done much worse! A King vs S Thomson, 2021

perfidious: Embarras de richesse: I append two such, ah, efforts from late in my playing days.

M Ashley vs A Shaw, 2000

I Foygel vs A Shaw, 2000

More than twenty years on, I still cringe when either game comes to mind; even what we call the walk of shame in poker does not equal this.

Fusilli: <perf> Ouch. Those games feel like not you. The same feeling I get when I play through this one!

I guess it happens to everyone...

In other news, I am likely to play a GM today (see my forum if curious).

keypusher: <Fusilli> thanks. I think Ill try to avoid that whole line for black if I ever get back to the board.

FSR: <Fusilli> You've probably figured all this out already, but here are some comments, heavily aided by Stockfish 16. You needed to challenge his center with ...c5 at some point, move 6 for example. 6...dxc4 is a little too accommodating, and Stockfish gives him an advantage after 7.Nbd2! After the inferior 7.Nc3, 7...Qb4! would have more or less forced some queen move, after which you could have played ...c5 or possibly ...b5!? with equality. Move 8 should have been your last chance for ...c5! Your 8...a6? was way too lackadaisical, letting him grab the center with 9.e4. After 9...Qb4?, he should have played 10.a3!! forcing 10...Qe7 11.e5! with a huge advantage, since both 10...Qxb2?? 11.Na4 and 10...Qxc4?? 11.Ne5 drop the queen (thanks for nothing, ...a6). The flaccid 10.Bd3? allowed 10...c5! for the last time, when White would still have had only a small advantage (+0.3). 10...Qxb2 was dangerous, but you must have figured "having said A . . ." With 12...Nc6! you might have hoped to hang on. After 12...Nbd7? 13.e5! the sky was falling.

Fusilli: Thanks <FSR>, that was instructive. I had not given much thought to the game after it.
