Black found a cracking winning move:
38...Nf3+!
The black queen wants the square, d4.

The black queen made a great manoeuvre: walking backwards up a staircase. It's always seeing that!

You mean down the staircase, don't you? (looking from the black side) <G>

yea it's a cool maneuver. It's good practice to routinely look for those in games, to gain the habit of not overlooking them.

Nov-14-23  Brenin: 38 ... Nf3+ 39 Rxf3 Qd4+ 40 Kf1 (else immediate mate) Rc8+ 41 Ke2 is easy to see, but the Black Q's zig-zagging retreat to a7 in order to play Qa1+ with the K on f1 (so that White's Rf1 block is impossible) is something else, and a thing of beauty.
Nov-14-23  TheaN: I missed the Ke2 defense for whatever reason, and that enables that beautiful backwards pattern. The game can be so astonishing if a maneuver like that works.

doubledrooks: Got it. A very nice series of checks by the black queen.
Nov-14-23  vajeer: Also how cool headed black is to play 50...Kf7
There is no rush to claim white queen. This patient move allows black to capture White's c pawn and gets his own advanced passed pawn and immediately kills the game!
Nov-14-23  mel gibson: Interesting position.

score for Black +6.67 depth 51.

An Englishman: Good Afternoon: Already knew this one, but that final combination still amazes. This game belongs in all of the anthologies.

perfidious: The stairstep pattern by the queen is familiar, but I do not recall a mating attack till now in which it was performed backwards rather than towards the enemy king.
Nov-16-23  Mayankk: A piece of art, this game.

The pattern may be well known, but for someone to spot this opportunity in a rapid game is doubly commendable.

Nov-17-23  Morpheu Torre Petto: Hello everyone! So amazed with this game with a study-like finish!

Found an interesting parallel …

when Santos unleashes a long combination with 38 …♘f3+!!:

… reminds of Karpov on the move: 39 …♘f3+!!

Nov-17-23  Morpheu Torre Petto: <perfidious: The stairstep pattern by the queen is familiar, but I do not recall a mating attack till now in which it was performed backwards rather than towards the enemy king.> Such a unique theme - only seen on studies, I believe. I can recall this game: M Lowcki vs Tartakower, 1937
Jan-27-24  catlover: What a beautiful combination. I got the first four moves but did not find the staircase maneuver.
Jan-27-24  TheaN: This looked familiar, now I did see it in full. Bit easy for a Saturday because again only the main line is worth analyzing.

Same here. And the added beauty of the goal being to reach the most distant file... and then there is still one more step away from the king, on that same file.

Jan-27-24  vajeer: Come on CG, don't repeat it that quickly!

Don't expect'em to take care of the site with attention and positivity.

Jan-28-24  vajeer: <Messiah> To be fair to them, they have made a lot of resources freely available to chess community. My post was more of a friendly complaint.
