 | | DaltriDiluvi: White's play made me think of Mikhail Tal... Not bad for a 12-year old. |

 | | DaltriDiluvi: <11.Kd1> and <13.Re1> are the only white piece moves where the piece does not move forward. (And since <13.Re1> threatens <14.Rxe6+>, you would can hardly call it a passive move). |
|
Nov-10-22 | | Cheapo by the Dozen: Having checked that this is NOT a case of an 18 year old playing a 12 year old, I don't get the pun at all. |

It's a case of an 18-move game played by a 12 year old. |
|
Nov-10-22 | | Brenin: Good win by the youngster. Perhaps I should start looking for a 19-move win by an 84-year-old. |

 | | beatgiant: <Brenin>
Or an 84-move win by a 19-year-old, like maybe S Taulbut vs Groszpeter, 1977 |

 | | keypusher: Wonderful game title and a terrific game that brightened my day (though Domdaniel wouldn't approve). |
|
Nov-10-22 | | AlicesKnight: <Brenin><beatgiant> I hope White didn't win an Armageddon game in 20 moves in the last few months - it might have been the end of everything. |

 | | keypusher: Like the Opera Game, the kind of game that makes you fall in love with chess. Some quick SF notes: The engine likes 6....cd better than 6....Nc6; it's also the favored move in the CG database, the few times this position has come up. SF thinks 10....Nxc2+ was a mistake (instead 10....Nf5 11.Qxh7 Qf6 12.Qh3 Ne5 is =) and taking the rook lost immediately. Black could have tried to bail out with 11....Nb4 12.Bb5 Nc6 13.Bg5 f6 14.Re1 Nb6 15.Ne5! fg 16.Nxc6 Qxd6 17.Nd4+ Kd8 18.Nxe6+ Bxe6 19.Rxe6 Qxe6 20.Qxf8+ Kc7 21.Qxc5+ with a very unpleasant position (+1.93). 12....a6 can be met with 13.Bg5!
Note that after the game's 12....Qb6 13.Re1! Qxd6 14.Bg5, 14....a6 would have been answered with 15.Qf6 and Black gets mated on the spot. "Best" for Black is 14....f6 15.Bxf6 a6, but after 16.Ng5 it's obviously hopeless. 16....Rxf6 17.Qxf6 a6 would have been met with 18.Nxd7 Bxd7 19.Rxe6+. The final position is mate in four.
After her 11th move, Black did hardly anything wrong, but it didn't matter! |

Nov-11-22 | | paavoh: Perhaps the pun is based on this description (from Wikipedia) about the Tchaikovsky's composition. <"... fifteen-minute overture is best known for its climactic volley of cannon fire, ringing chimes, and a brass fanfare finale. It has also become a common accompaniment to fireworks displays..."> Very similar to what went on in this game! |
|
Nov-12-22 | | ndg2: The cool thing about the "1812" Overture (and about using it as a pun): Tchaikovsky made great musical use of parts of the French national anthem ("La Marseillaise"). At several times, you hear the opening bars of the anthem, seemingly accompanying an attack by the French cavalry, only to get drowned out later by the cannons and fireworks. |

I Popov vs D Gordievsky, 2013 Varying after move 6. Anyone with access to a larger DB know how far the theory went on this gem? |
