 | | Sally Simpson: Hi Jimmy,
In 1995 Sandy Bells were a player short for a Division 4 league match and asked if anyone in the bar knew how to pay chess. Up steps a lad, he is designated board 6, piled into the back of car, driven across town and delivers Fools Mate! The only recorded Fools Mate in the history of the Edinburgh Chess League. Having discovered a new star the lad was invited to play again. He resigned when stalemated because he did not know the rules. Soon after that he left Edinburgh. That, as far as I know and am 99% certain, is his playing career. One win with Fools Mate and resigning in a drawn position. My quickest win in a serious game was a lad (a seasoned player on board two in Div. One) as White he played a finger slip 3. fxe5 in the Falkbeer he resigned after my 3...Qh4+ 3. fxe5 has also been played in an Olympiad.

Jun-17-22 | | Messiah: why does this CRAP exist in the database????????????? |
|
Jun-17-22 | | Z free or die: Fred should keep this stuff on his forum - or perhaps write a book, <Openings not to play> It does raise the following question, asked in ernest: <What criteria should <CG> use for games in it's DB?> . |

Then even I could upload opening disasters, for example, yesterday in the pub, being with Black, I played the following "game": 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Na3 e6 4.e5 d6 [...] 0-1
where I destroyed my opponent in 20-ish moves. But why to pollute the database with this crap? |

 | | fredthebear: Yet once again, the big lip xy who does not play chess is telling chess players what to do and not do here. It's BINGO night, isn't it big lip xy? Give that a try. There is nothing golden precious about the CG database. It's nowhere close to the best database around. Opening Explorer is a useful feature. The CG database is not being updated in a timely manner; it's falling farther and farther behind others. Speaking of Opening Explorer, this NN vs F Rhine, 2021 game is the ONLY example of 2.f5 in the database (as it probably should be, since it is an inferior move compared to 2.fxe5). It gives pause to those who play Bird's Opening or From's Gambit. Let's be glad that Master Rhine obliges this sight. He plays numerous blitz games on the internet; he is selective about those games that he submits - quick, clean kills for those of us who appreciate miniatures. One can learn something about attacking chess from his games. Check out Master Rhine's profile on Chess.com. Doesn't this website have much greater concerns to worry about? |

 | | louispaulsen88888888: Oh I see g4 has been played before. I should check these things out before posting. I did it myself once. Me vs Kenneth Cruz
Jamaica Chess Club NY
Offhand game
Sometime in the 80s or perhaps late 70s
1 f4 e5 2 g4 Qh4 mate
I liked getting original positions but this was a bit too original |

 | | louispaulsen88888888: Oh correction. 2 g4 is a novelty. 3 g4 has been tried but not 2 g4 except for the game I posted just now |

 | | fredthebear: Here's the Vampire Gambit courtesy of GothamChess, which "normally" starts 1.c4 e5 2.f4?! Declining From's Gambit with 2.c4 would be the same thing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqV... There are no examples in the database, so here it is. A quick look at Stockfish:
1) -1.13 (23 ply) 2...exf4 3.Nf3 g5 4.h3 Nf6 5.e3 Nh5 6.Nc3 Bg7 7.d4 O-O 8.Bd3 d5 9.O-O Ng3 10.Rf2 dxc4 11.Bxc4 h5 12.exf4 g4 13.Ne5 Bf5 14.Ne2 Ne4 15.Qb3 Nxf2 16.Bxf7+ Kh8 17.Kxf2 Qh4+ 18.g3 Qxh3 19.Qd5 IM Levy Rozman recommends 4.g3 to protect 5.Nh4. It's something akin to a King's Gambit Accepted. Here are some other gambits in the English Opening for those who are curious: English Opening
Ferenc Gambit – A10 – 1.c4 f5 2.Nc3 Nf6 3.e4 Jaenisch Gambit (Halibut Gambit) – A10 – 1.c4 b5 White Gambit – A10 – 1.c4 d5 2.b3 dxc4 3.bxc4 Qd4 4.Nc3 Bellon Gambit – A22 – 1.c4 e5 2.Nc3 Nf6 3.Nf3 e4 4.Ng5 b5 Symmetrical, Queen’s Bishop’s Gambit – A30 – 1.c4 c5 2.b4 Wade Gambit – A10 – 1.c4 f5 2.g4
I couldn't find anything on the Vampire Gambit at CGs, so here it is for the sake of documentation. Perhaps it exists but has a different name. Opening Explorer showed zero results, but OE is not what it once was due to recent restrictions. "Dubious, therefore playable." -- Savielly Tartakower. |
