Jan-22-20  ossipossi: Black knight very very strong

Mateo: 25...d5! is a good move for the reason given by <Atking>.
Jan-22-20  Ulhumbrus: One idea is 26...a5 27 Nd3 Qd4
Jan-22-20  Pedro Fernandez: <<Everett>: I’d rather play black here.> Hmm...apparently it seems as more easy to play which it doesn't mean black is better.
Jan-22-20  Everett: <PF> absolutely, I’m just staying in what position I’d be more comfortable...

moronovich: Have just returned from the dentist :)
And a rather complex position we have here.
Jan-22-20  vonKrolock: In the a2-g8 diagonal the Bishop will be better placed. But this improvement is not enough to imbalance the situation in Caru's favour. The side with the Pawns may have better prospects in an endgame.
Jan-22-20  Atking: 29...g5! and 30...h5 pawns coming to the third rank will prove to be at least equal to B
Jan-22-20  JAMESROOK: Hi folks! If I am correct this is a King's Indian formation, I loved to play as white 5. f3......what is this 5. h3 and why?

thanks

An Englishman: Good Morning: Black tried to avoid ...g6-g5 for a while, but now that the Rf5 sits between the White Rook and Black Queen, perhaps the time has come to attempt a pawn roller. Looking at plans involving Nd3-f2 and Bb5-d3. Figuring out the tactics is difficult.

moronovich: I would slightly prefer white, mainly because if black wants to progress he has to weaken his K. pos by going g5/h5
Jan-22-20  Pedro Fernandez: So <Moro>, are you in total disagreement with our dear friend <Everett>?
Jan-22-20  Ulhumbrus: If Firouzja can find a way to make a weapon of his king side pawns this suggests that Caruana will need to find a way to make a weapon of his bishop.
Jan-22-20  diceman: <JAMESROOK: Hi folks! If I am correct this is a King's Indian formation, I loved to play as white 5. f3......what is this 5. h3 and why?

White played Be3 next.
Probably didn't want to deal with Ng4.

Played f4 next.
Got it in with one tempo.

An Englishman: Good Morning: Restrain, blockade, destroy. 30.Rg1 begins the process of turning White's strength on the light squares into something meaningful. The game continues to get more interesting, hope they don't run to the nearest draw.
Jan-22-20  sudoplatov: 5.h3 is a slightly different form of Saemisch KID. It's considered (by statistics at Chess365) to be promising for White. The Kingside is stronger but the Center less so. White usually attacks with g4 rather than h4.
Jan-22-20  diceman: Now Caruana has an open h file.

keypusher: Looks like Firouzja went badly awry -- understandable. I hope he doesn't let this and the last game get him down.
Jan-22-20  Atking: To give White the opportunity to open h file was a mistake. 30...h5 and if 31.h4 g4 was surely better.

moronovich: Black is close to being lost.
And for the second day in a row,Firouzja seemed to totally misjudge a critical position.
Jan-22-20  sudoplatov: White has his open file. Now Black has to be very careful. The extra piece (the Bishop bearing on e8) looks a bit more useful now.

I had thought of blockading the d-Pawn on d5 but perhaps d3 is sufficient. The Pawn is more dangerous but also more vulnerable.

For comparison, check out Capablanca vs Alekhine, 1927.

Jan-22-20  YetiBlitz: 30. ... Kf8 looks like the key mistake. No time or even need for such a move. A shame because it would have been great to see 30... h5 which retains all the tension in an excitingly unbalanced position.

moronovich: <Pedro Fernandez: So <Moro>, are you in total disagreement with our dear friend <Everett>?>

Sorry dear <Pedro>.

Haven´t seen his comment.

Jan-22-20  vonKrolock: Yes, with the 'h' vertical open for the white Rooks, Caruana's prospects improved considerably...
Jan-22-20  sudoplatov: The Chess24 engine suggests that 30...h5 was better but after White's Bc4 also suggests that ...Kf8 will be required anyway.
