30. Qxc8+!

One of those typical positions where if it's a puzzle, it's not so hard. But OTB? No chance.

An Englishman: Good Evening; If sound, this seems like quite the unjustly neglected brilliancy. Not to mention a rather large upset.

Happy Mondays.

Jan-08-24  TheaN: Nothing to add to <Mayankk>. Rare for Nakamura to fall for this stuff, even in 2017.

yes and now I see why. It's the opening he chose.. The Reversed Blunderfilled Gambit !

Jan-08-24  mel gibson: So easy - LOL.
On Monday we can all feel like chess experts.
Jan-08-24  saturn2: Nakamura has a weak backrank here

fredthebear: Indeed! Black's backrank seemed quite sound with the rook and bishop pairs as late as 24.Bxf7+ KxB etc. Such an impressive dismantling of the castle in rapid play.
Jan-08-24  Damenlaeuferbauer: Even in a(n) (online) rapid game against the American elite GM Hikaru Nakamura, the Argentine GM Sandro Mareco found the mate in 3 moves with the nice queen sacrifice 30.Qxc8+!,Bxc8/Nxc8 31.Rd8+,Qe8 32.Rxe8#. He may be very proud of this achievement!
Jan-08-24  Mayankk: 26 Qh5 was another cute little trap.

If Black goes the greedy route, 26 ... Qxc2 27 Qf7+ Kh8 28 Qxf8#.

Nakamura of course wouldn't fall for it, but am sure some of us would have, especially in a rapid game.

Jan-08-24  TheaN: <PawnSac: The Reversed Blunderfilled Gambit> Lawl. Whilst a funny pun, it's a White Gambit, reversed as it's a reversed Benko. Pretty tricky line to play into as Black.

takebackok: Easy, nice way to start week queen sac Monday. Nakamura missed a better chance with 23...Ba6 & his 29...Ne7?? "Real holler", if 29... Kh8 keeps the game going!

yea I get that. I play the Benko on occasion, but I'll sacrifice all propriety for a good pun. lol

But technically, BOTH play the gambit line. Black can avoid it, but you know Nakamura.. always ready for a walk on the wild side (at fast time controls, anyway)

True, but even though I don't play this line (I occasionally play the Reti but more as transposition to the King's English), Black alternatives must be worse?

If White gets b5 in Black's position is unpleasant to play. Computers don't seem to agree per se but still... might actually look up this line, it looks interesting from the White side, especially considering I'm used to King's English setups but it tends to be a bit stale.
