Jan-08-24  stone free or die: <OCF> have you ever ask <Suzz> to divvy up the pun selection duties?

Would you consider doing a tranche of it?

It's a languish I can speak fluently.

Jan-08-24  VerySeriousExpert: Everyone can find the way to White's advantage here: https://fi.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esp... .
Jan-08-24  goodevans: I agree it's a very weak pun but prattling on about it ain't gonna help.
Jan-08-24  goodevans: Hi, <offramp>, did you make it to Hastings amidst all the travel problems on Friday and, if so, how did it go?

offramp: <goodevans: Hi, <offramp>, did you make it to Hastings amidst all the travel problems on Friday and, if so, how did it go?>

On Friday there was a tree on the tracks but I did get to Hastings. Saturday started at 9:30am. It is a venue with food and tea but nothing else. There is a LIDL nearby, about a 15 minute walk away.

I realised that play would carry on until c21:00+. I wisely took a bye for round 3. Then I saw the sights at Hastings. It's a very nice town. I had a pint of <Theakston's Old Peculier>, which is one of my favourite beers.

Then, when I woke up at 7:40 on Sunday I had a great idea: I could simply blow out the whole Sunday. So that is what I did: I went back under the duvet.

In future I will play <online>. That means zero travelling.

Jan-08-24  goodevans: Sounds like you enjoyed Saturday evening at least.

I too enjoy a pint of <Old Peculier> though it's been a little while since I last did.

My wife and I stayed in <Masham>, home of the <Theakston> brewery, a few years ago. It's also the home of the <Black Sheep> brewery set up just down the road by one of the Theakston family after 'Scottish & Newcastle' bought the Theakston business. The latter had a bar which we visited most evenings as the beer was good. Very similar to Theakston's in fact.

Some of the Theakston family bought back the Theakston business a few years later so now different bits of the same family own rival breweries in the same small Yorkshire town. Must make family get-togethers quite interesting.

Jan-08-24  stone free or die: <OhioChessFan: <sfod> no, and no.>

Thanks for the answer <OCF>.

I'm a little disappointed, given you often criticize the puns selected. I thought you might care enough to make a contribution.

I'd also be curious to see a sampling of what you consider the good puns that are "languishing".

* * * * *

Afaic - I give a lot of latitude to those willing to do the work to make a feature available. And even given that allowance, I think <Missy> is doing a helluva job running the puns.

Of course I wish other <CG>-ers would share in the work, if only to get a little more variety to the selections, and to have a backup in case <Missy> should ever become indisposed.

* * * * *

Side note - we all have our critics. In many cases they offer so little constructive, and are so little-minded, that little comment is needed.

Jan-08-24  goodevans: <... to have a backup in case <Missy> should ever become indisposed.>

It's okay. We've already got that covered: Karpov vs Timman, 1988

Jan-09-24  stone free or die: <goodevans> got a really good laugh from that!

OhioChessFan: <sfod: I'm a little disappointed, given you often criticize the puns selected. >

I rarely criticize puns except for the people who routinely criticize others. I assume you know the usual suspects. If you don't, watch who I criticize. Heat, kitchen, etc.

<Afaic - I give a lot of latitude to those willing to do the work to make a feature available. And even given that allowance, I think <Missy> is doing a helluva job running the puns>

Taking advantage of his position to run 52 of his own puns a year, 75% of them lame, with 6000 some others by thousands of other submitters, doesn't constitute a good job in my view.

Jan-09-24  stone free or die: Thanks for the reply <OCF>.

In my last post I wrote:

<I thought you might care enough to make a contribution.>

I have two criticisms of this - first, I neglected to mention that you've contributed many of your own puns to <CG>.

And secondly, I should criticize myself for also failing to note that criticism itself can often be constructive, and therefore a contribution in its own fashion.

Of course, sometimes criticism is just plain crabbing, too. I'm not implying this in your direction at the moment, but just making an obvious general statement.

* * * * *

Random thought - maybe <Missy> should offer up a couple of random picks from the pun pool to address any issue of subjective bias?

OhioChessFan: Here are 10 of my own that I think are outstanding:

J Tin vs A Sarana, 2017

B Amin vs TransWarp, 2009

D Reizniece-Ozola vs S Johnsen, 2011

Karpov vs Chandler, 1983

(IMHO, the best pun ever submitted on this site)

E Cohen vs R Rowley, 2001

L White vs NN, 2003

G Danilov vs W R Augustine, 1963

G Tokhirjonova vs M Lee, 2021

Joachim Hendrix vs R Stern, 2016

Deep Junior vs REBEL, 2001

I have well over a 100 I would rate A or better. Here's the listing of all puns submitted: https://www.chessgames.com/perl/sho...

I can't say much for the ratings, as some very highly rated are really blah, and outside of my own, there are a lot of nice puns way down the ratings.

Jan-10-24  stone free or die: OK, I have to express that I've put my foot in it this time, as I'm not really a pun guy (just ask <dice>!).

But I did start looking at some of your puns <OCF>, and got this far -

D Reizniece-Ozola vs S Johnsen, 2011

Which is a game without comment by you. So do I have to cross-reference the game in that pun list you gave?

(I couldn't find Ozola there, so I guess... not?)

As far as the ratings goes on that list - there seems to be a lack of statistics on many of the puns. Or am I mistaken?

OhioChessFan: Sorry, my comment was on page 1 of 2 of Ozola-Johnsen. The pun was "Ozola Partie".

The stats on the pun rating page look okay to me.

Jan-10-24  stone free or die: <OCF> - what's going on??

I only have one page for <Ozola--Johnsen>, huh?

There were other examples too, I wonder what the deal is then.

Jan-10-24  stone free or die: <The stats on the pun rating page look okay to me.>

Not sure what you mean here.

Also, is the Ozola game to be found there?

OhioChessFan: Ah, I stand corrected. A different pun was used on the game in question so I resubmitted to a different Ozola game. Here's the original comment.

D Reizniece-Ozola vs Y Hou, 2016

<OCF: The stats on the pun rating page look okay to me.>

<sfod: Not sure what you mean here.>

I see the ratings and number of times they were rated. You said some appeared to be missing statistics.

<Also, is the Ozola game to be found there?>

I'm not sure. A bunch of submissions were deleted, although my personal submission list is intact and the games therein link to the specific game.

Jan-11-24  stone free or die: <<OCF> I see the ratings and number of times they were rated. You said some appeared to be missing statistics.>

I see, this was just a miscommunication then.

When I said

<As far as the ratings goes on that list - there seems to be a lack of statistics on many of the puns.>

I wasn't referring to the stats being missing on the page but that there are too few votes to gauge many (if not most) of the puns.

I know <CG> has a low turnout here - but I wouldn't trust evaluations of quality with less than 5 voters at the least. I'd much prefer 10 or more votes even.

Now, otoh, I know <Missy> thinks one vote is more than enough to rate a pun!

Jan-11-24
Premium Chessgames Member
OhioChessFan: Well, there are so many puns that it's hard to generate a lot of votes for any one. Of the 6728, I estimate 6000 could be dismissed without loss. But I agree the ratings don't mean a whole lot. <Missy> sometimes seems to use highly rateds, sometimes not, not sure it matters.
