Feb-21-07  whatthefat: Very unfortunate for Ivanchuk. He must be wishing he'd taken the repetition.
Feb-21-07  Eyal: Ivanchuk's play at the later stages of the game was certainly weak, but still - the way Magnus seized his chances after 34.Ne2? and pounced on every mistake made by Ivanchuk from that point onward is quite impressive.
Feb-21-07  grebenarov: I'm a Topalov's fan but I am sure he's got to be careful against Carlsen in this tournament. This kid will be a world champion one day!
Feb-21-07  YouRang: Sheesh, I get home expecting to see a draw, and CARLSEN WON! It looks like 53. Rb5 was the loser for Ivanchuk, although I think he had other sub-par moves besides that.
Feb-21-07  YouRang: Earlier, Ivanchuk would have been better off with 49. g4.

tamar: I tuned in to see the draw, and see...The Dancing Rook! How?
Feb-22-07  notyetagm: <Bungalow Bill: ... He has showed that he can beat Moro, but Ivanchuk is harder, his rock solid.>

Ivanchuk rock solid? What???

This is how Ivanchuk always plays: a brilliancy against Topalov followed by this abysmal performance against Carlsen.

Feb-22-07  alicefujimori: 45.a4 might be a better alternative.
Feb-22-07  Plato: <notyetagm> It was a good game, but it wasn't exactly a brilliancy against Topalov. Even if Topalov's position was worse, there was a lot of fight left when he (Topalov) suddenly blundered.
Feb-22-07  Manuel G. Vergara: To Mark Paragua's Fans in Baguio City:
THERE WILL BE A 30 BOARD SIMULTANEOUS EXHIBITION BY GM MARK PARAGUA FIDE 2570+ AT THE BAGUIO CENTER MALL FEBRUARY 24, 2007 SATURDAY 1:00PM COME ONE COME ALL REGISTER EARLY !!! -MGV
Feb-22-07  jmrulez2004: What can i say, Very wonderful use of his two knights here by Carlsen.Reminds me of Petrosian in one way. Certainly, this dude's game has definately improved defensively.Bravo to Carlsen!
Feb-22-07  sanyas: I felt like Carlsen had an early advantage out of the opening. Then White had equality, but somehow let it slip... 58...♘e4 was the perfect place to resign. The point was that after 59.♖xa2 ♖f2+ 60.♔b3 ♖xa2 61.♔xa2 there is 61...♘c3+. I also expected a draw here.
Feb-22-07  firebyrd: Hi-de-ho! I stayed up until time control, when it seemed clear that Magnus had saved the half point, and as noone goofed in time trouble the draw seemed certain. And here's Magnus with the whole point, just like a rabbit out of the hat!
Feb-22-07  popski: This is win a big surprise for me. Amazing win! Bravo Magnus!!
Feb-22-07  Tactic101: Thats one for the records. Magnus is having an amazing tournament so far. If he keeps this up, he might just end up in the top three, certainly an impressive achievement considering his age.
Feb-22-07  Elixir of Life: I predict: Carlsen will be the youngest winner of Linares.
Feb-22-07  percyblakeney: <I predict: Carlsen will be the youngest winner of Linares>

Then he would beat Ivanchuk again, he was still 19 years old when winning in 1989.

Feb-22-07  Elixir of Life: <percyblakeney>

Hmmm... I don't think Carlsen'll win this tourney (he'll get 2nd, just like where he's at right now.) But next year... He'll win.

Honza Cervenka: 34.Ne2 was a slip. White should not cut his Bishop from control of c4. 34.Ng2 was better option.
Feb-22-07  paul1959: <Honza Cervenka> Even after 34 Ng2 Ne5 Qc3 Nc4 is strong. White will have problems defending his d4 pawn

Domdaniel: A very surprising result. I left, expecting a draw, and hoping neither would blunder as they'd both played so well.

It looks like that old psychological classic -- Ivanchuk wasn't able to gear down his expectations, to switch from "I can win this" to "I'd better make sure I don't lose".

Of course Magnus played superbly. But Ivanchuk's great play up to move 20 or so deserved better.

Feb-22-07  outplayer: If 37.Rxd5 Qe6 and white loses the exchange.

Honza Cervenka: <paul1959> Instead of 35.Qc3 white can play 35.Qf2. After that 35...Nc4 is no problem.
Feb-22-07  Eyal: <Honza Cervenka: <paul1959> Instead of 35.Qc3 white can play 35.Qf2. After that 35...Nc4 is no problem.> I'm not sure, though, how real is White's advantage after 35.Qf2 Rxc5 36.Rxc5 Nc4 - e.g., 37.Bxc4 dxc4 38.Ne3 (38.Rxc4 Qb1+ 39.Qf1 Qxa2) Qb1+ 39.Kg2 Rb8 40.Nxc4 g4. Maybe White should play 37.h4 in this line.
Feb-22-07  Gregor Samsa Mendel: I don't understand 53 Rb5. If white had just sat tight, say with 53 Ke2, how could black have broken through?
