Jan-24-07 | | nimzo knight: What after 13.. Nxe5 14. Qxf6+ Kg8 |
Jan-24-07 | | chessmoron: Got it in 5 secs. Quicker than the previous one. |
Jan-24-07 | | goldfarbdj: I considered Bxf7+, but didn't see the followup of Nxe5+. I thought the answer was going to be Nd5 -- though looking at that now, I think it fails to Nxd5. |
Jan-24-07 | | goldfarbdj: nimzo knight: 15. Qxe5 with an easy win. |
Jan-24-07 | | Fisheremon: <goldfarbdj: nimzo knight: 15. Qxe5 with an easy win.> or 15.Rd8 if you prefer attacking. |
Jan-24-07 | | Fezzik: I love the actual finish to this game. Those who nit-pick and find other "easy" wins miss the beauty of the attack that was played without the aid of a computer. Kudos to Jens Kristiansen! |
Jan-24-07 | | dzechiel: Found the bishop sac followed by the knight check after about a minute. There was all kinds of good stuff in the position. |
Jan-24-07 | | James Bowman: Nice finish, I found the first three moves easy enough but did not see it to the finished smothered mate, although in actual play I think I too would have ended there as the previouse moves were almost instinctive. I hope to develope the abillity to calculate that deep into a position. I also have a long way to go to be able to get to the starting position of this puzzle ;o] |
Jan-24-07 | | Deefstes: There's something about a smothered mate that I just always find aesthetically pleasing. |
Jan-24-07 | | prinsallan: Nice one, and got it easily. Very forcing moves. |
Jan-24-07 | | Marco65: I found it difficult. Many variations to calculate. I saw everything up to 17.Qxf6+ and stopped satisfied of having gained two pawns, didn't imagine there was a forced mate.
The other variations:
a) 13...Nxe5 14.Qxf6+ Kg8(e8) 15.Rd8(+)
b) 13...Kg8 14.Qe6+ Kg7 15.Qf7#
c) 13...Ke8 14.Qe6+ Be7 [14...Kd8 15.Nf7+ Kc7 16.Bf4+ and mate] 15.Bxf6 Kd8 [15...Nxf6 or 15...Kf8 16.Qf7#] 16.Rxd7+ and mate |
Jan-24-07 | | dakgootje: _O_
Very nice puzzle all in all! |
Jan-24-07 | | Tactic101: Yeah. I saw the bishop sac and also the waiting move Qe6. The rest is kind of instinctive. Very good puzzle. |
Jan-24-07 | | alphee: I got the first moves but nothing really good after 14.♕xf6+ as my continuation for Black was different: 12. ♗xf7+ ♔xf7 13. ♘xe5+ ♘xe5 14. ♕xf6+ ♔g8 15. ♕xe5 ♕c5 16. ♕xc5 ...and I didn't go any further. Obviously the first move had to be a check as the white queen was under attack and could not do much alone. |
Jan-24-07 | | ianD: Not that dificult. Bxf7 is intuitively the right move which I spotted instantly.
Took me a minute to confirm white is better in all lines. |
Jan-24-07 | | KingV93: Bxf7+! My all time favorite move, it means you get to sit on the edge of your chair for the rest of the game ! :) |
Jan-24-07 | | jaaron11: Great puzzle. A truly one-sided game. It's not often that you see a forced mate sequence starting at move 12. |
Jan-24-07 | | chopin4525: Altough white has a huge advantage I don't think this is a forced mate because if you evaluate the position you'll see that after 12.Bxf7+,Kxf7 13.Nxe5+,Nxe5(even if white is still better black can hold the position for a while)14.Qxf6+,Kg8 15Qxe5,Qc5(Here I thought I got the solution but then I saw the game and I was doubtful so I analysed the position with deep junior 10 and I found that my line was the best, junior also continue as follows...) 16.Bf6,Qxe5 17.Bxe5,Bh6+ 18.Kb1,Be6 19.Bxh8 and now white is winning! What do you think?^_^ |

 | | playground player: I'd still like to know what happens to players who get addicted to computer assistance and then have to play a game without it. |
Jan-24-07 | | kevin86: <jaaron11> Early mate announcements are not rare at all. I have even seen a game with a mate announcement longer than the amount of moves played before it. I answered only the first two moves of this one,but I think I could have come up with the rest. A whimsical finish with black's pieces forced to smother the king to "protect" him. |
Jan-24-07 | | chopin4525: playground player: I'd still like to know what happens to players who get addicted to computer assistance and then have to play a game without it. Altough I really appreciate your subtle irony have you ever heard with whom radjabov trains himself? No?I have pity on you :) |
Jan-24-07 | | Tomlinsky: <I'd still like to know what happens to players who get addicted to computer assistance and then have to play a game without it.> If they are not using their brains they will gain nothing. If they are using their brains they will improve. It's a limitless resource for refinement at a personal level or a crutch, there is a choice. |
Jan-24-07 | | nimzo knight: 11..Bf8 is definitely a mistake. But what are other options of black, which white must evaluate before playing Qd6.
I think 11.. Qb4 is a possibility. Of course main purpose of Qd6 is to stop black from castling. |
Jan-24-07 | | jaaron11: <kevin86> True enough at the lower levels. I meant that it's rare to see a forced mate among players who are rated high enough for their games to be posted on this site. |
Jan-24-07 | | Kruglov: <Marco65: c) 13...Ke8 14.Qe6+ Be7 [14...Kd8 15.Nf7+ Kc7 16.Bf4+ and mate] 15.Bxf6 Kd8 [15...Nxf6 or 15...Kf8 > or 15...Qd8 <16.Qf7#] 16.Rxd7+ and mate> Good analysis, thanks. There are few more variations of this line.
16...Qc5 [16...Qb4 17.Na2 Qc5] 17.Nxd7 Bxd7 (forced, Queen is under attack and she has to protect e7) 18.Rxd7 and mate |
