 | | offramp: The most important piece in Sho-gi (👑⏳in Catalonian) is the ushu (🐍🐾). If the ushu is threatened the threatenator must announce KUJU (🐰💈🚾) which is like check but not so 🎆🚽🚧. |

May-04-16 | | FairyPromotion: Thanks for the explanation <offramp>! I was wondering how the pun relates to the game. Previously I have tried <Big in Japan> & <The Japanese Immortal> as pun suggestions, as I think this game is that good. Glad that it finally made it as GotD. |

May-04-16 | | User not found: <Party Animal: Beautiful ending & all, if white 0-0 on move 16 instead of playing f3 white is doing fine.> I think from 18..Bh2! black saw <it>. I had to go back and forth a few moves to understand it (btw why not 12.Qxc6 immediately instead of Ng5!?) but I'm sure I've come across this game before. Either way, nice little game. |

Dec-04-16 | | Artar1: I spotted the weaknesses in White's position, but my attack fell far short of what <Habu> delivered over the board so brilliantly. |
|
Dec-04-16 | | Artar1: I'm going to save all the game puzzles I miss, and then go over them so I might improve. |
|
Dec-04-16 | | Artar1: It took Stockfish a matter of a few seconds to find the right continuation at move eighteen. Amazing. |

|
Dec-04-16 | | Steve.Patzer: Doesn't 19. Qxb4 improve for White? |
|
Dec-04-16 | | Cheapo by the Dozen: I know what I want the answer to be. 18 ... Qb6 strongly inhibits castling. The big reason is that after 19 O-O Qxd4+ we're headed for everybody's favorite smothered mate theme. 19 Be3 doesn't do much to enforce king-side castling after 19 ... f4, and queen-side castling can be inhibited by ... Rc1. However, I don't see what to do against the simple plan fxe4/Qd1, because Black is no longer threatening ... Qh4 ... and it turns out that the answer was something completely different from my idea. :) |
|
Dec-04-16 | | Cheapo by the Dozen: I was about to write that this game had the relentless attack-at-all-costs feel of a double bughouse game -- and I find it was played by a Shogi legend. Not exactly the same thing, of course, but there are similarities ... |
|
Dec-04-16 | | nalinw: That is because attack at all costs IS the very essence of Shogi. If you ever stop the attack your opponent will attack back - the key difference being that every piece you sacrifice is available to him to parachute back on the board as one of his pieces!! |

Dec-04-16 | | mel gibson: White moves
21 Rh1 the computer says mate in 10
Instead
21 Be2-d3 gives a score of -3.70 for white depth 18. & when I played it out
at 6 seconds per move white still loses
in an end game. |
|
Dec-04-16 | | morfishine: Dazzling game, but <19.Qxb4> looks better for White protecting the d-pawn, at least temporarily |

 | | Fusilli: <al wazir: Where's the win after 21. Rh3 ?> What I see is that black recovers all the material, still has attack, and a 4-pawn material advantage. Writing only black's moves, since white's are all forced:
21...Qg1+ 22...Qf2+ 23...Qxf1+ 24...Qxg2+ and 25... Qxh3. That must be why white went for 21.Rh1. |

Dec-04-16 | | agb2002: Black has two knights for a rook and a bishop.
White threatens fxe4 and Qxa7.
The dark squares around the white king look vulnerable. This suggests 18... Bg3+, 18... Bxh2 and 18... Ng3. In the case of 18... Bg3+ 19.hxg3 Qxd4 20.fxe4 Nxe4 21.Rf1 and the attack seems to lose momentum. -----
In the case of 18... Ng3 19.hxg3 Bxg3+ 20.Kd1 (20.Kf1 Qxd4 and mate in three) 20... Qxd4+ 21.Kc2 doesn't look very good for Black. -----
In the case of 18... Bxh2:
A) 19.Rxh2 Qxd4
A.1) 20.fxe4 Nxe4
A.1.a) 21.Rh1 Qf2+ 22.Kd1 Rd8+ 23.Kc2 (23.Bd3 Rxd3+ 24.Bd2 Qxd2#; 23.Bd2 Rxd2+ 24.Kc1 Qc5+ 25.Kb1 Rxb2+ 26.Kxb2 Qc3+ 27.Kb1 Nd2#) 23... Qxe2+ 24.Kb1 (24.Kb3 Nc5+ 25.Kxb4 Nxa4 26.Kxa4 Rb8 and mate soon) 24... Nc3+ 25.bxc3 bxc3 A.1.a.i) 26.Qb3 Qd3+ 27.Qc2 Rb8+ 28.Bb2 Rxb2+ 29.Kc1 Qxc2#. A.1.a.ii) 26.Bf4 Qb2#.
A.1.a.iii) 26.Qf4 Qd3#.
A.1.a.iv) 26.a3 Rb8+ 27.Qb4 Qd3+ 28.Ka2 Qc2+ 29.Bb2 (29.Qb2 Q(R)xb2+ 30.Bxb2 R(Q)xb2#) 29... Rxb4 and mate in two. A.1.b) 21.Qa5 (to control d8) 21... Qg1+ 22.Bf1 Qf2+ 23.Kd1 Qxf1+ 24.Kc2 Rc8+ 25.Kb3 (25.Kb1 Qd3#) 25... Qc4+ 26.Ka4 Nc5+ 27.Qxc5 Rxc5 and mate next with b3 or Qb5. A.1.c) 21.g3 (to control f2) 21... Qg1+ 22.Bf1 Qxh2 A.1.c.i) 23.Be3 Qxg3+ 24.Ke2 f4 with four pawns and attack for the piece looks winning for Black. A.1.c.ii) 23.Qxa7 Rd8 looks also winning for Black. For example, 24.Bf4 Qxb2 25.Rd1 Qc3+ 26.Ke2 Qc2+ wins decisive material. A.2) 20.Rh1 Qf2+ as in A.1.a.
B) 19.fxe4 Bg3+
B.1) 20.Kf1 Qxd4 and mate in three.
B.2) 20.Kd1 Qxd4+ 21.Kc2 (21.Bd2 Nxe4 22.Qc2 Rd8 wins two pawns at least) 21... Rc8+ 22.Kb3 (22.Kb1 Qxe4+ and mate in two) 22... Nxe4 and the threat Nc5# seems to win. -----
I don't have time for more. I'd play 18... Bxh2. |

click for larger view It concedes the rook but protects the white bishop. It does not look like an easy win for black at this point. |

Dec-04-16 | | YouRang: Brilliant, but I didn't see it.
The main idea I tried out was 18...Ng3 19.hxg3 Bxg3+ followed by ...Qxd4+ and ...Rc8+. It looks like a king hunt, but in reality the king is leading me into an ambush. :-( |
|
Dec-04-16 | | blackdranzer: I thought about Ng4 for so long...it seems like a good move. Bh2 was missed completely..becoz I thought Bh2 Qb4 Nd5 and then what? |
|
Dec-04-16 | | psmith: <JimfromProvidence>
Stockfish thinks Black is up by about a full piece after 21. Qb5 Qg1+ 22. Bf1 Qxh1. White just doesn't have any good moves and his King is still exposed. |
|
Dec-04-16 | | mel gibson: < Jimfromprovidence: I kind of like 21 Qb5 as a defense. click for larger view
It concedes the rook but protects the white bishop. It does not look like an easy win for black at this point.> DR4 64 bit chooses that too if given 6 seconds to find a move,
but if given a lot longer it chooses the move below. 21 Be2-d3 gives a score of -3.70 for white depth 18. |
