offramp: Game 2. A Centre Game, and White offers a gambit named after White: the Tassilo von der Lasa Gambit.
The gambit went very very badly right from the start.

Vd Lasa had offered his d-pawn. That resulted with a black central mass of pawns that gave problems to the white pieces. 19...Re8.

White could have tried an exchange sac: 20. Rxd3. Then follow up with Qxd3, then Ng5 or Bc2. He would have had chances.

22. ..Qc8!
I think Staunton now started to lose the thread. When he played 22...Qc8 the best continuation is ...Qg4. I think he was tired and he played 23. ..Qc5.

The black queen is back to c5. White's position had definitely improved. In fact, he now had serious threats.

Black can't play 28...fxe6 owing to Qx♘g6.
If Black plays 28,,,Rxe6, there is a fork with 29. f5. Black would be okay though, after 29. f5 Re4! 30. fxg6 fxg6 - he would have three pawns for the knight. Staunton didn't like the outcome of 28...Rxe6, and instead played 28...Rd6.

Suddenly White had a miraculous chance to draw. Vd Lasa should have played
29. f5!!

If Black played 29...Nf8? he would lose immediately with 30. Bxg7!
But Black could play 29...Nf4!
White couldn't reply with 30. Rxf4 owing to ...Qg1#
The best move for White is 30. Rg3, and Black would play 30...Nh5. with a repetition. Draw! Vd Lasa missed his chance with ♙f5; he then lost his ♙ at e6.

Really, the game was over now.
I think both players played well. Vd Lasa had a very bad opening, then he tried hard to get some chances. At move 30 he missed his chance. I think Staunton had a good position out from the opening. He seemed to lose the track, but he got back on course. |
