Phony Benoni: Well, I guessed it was probably a "Game of Thrones" reference, since Winter and a weird name that looked female was involved. So I googled, and the first thing that popped up was a promo saying "Brexit is Coming".

Very funny for the regulars around here, but really an inside joke.

Jun-24-16  AlicesKnight: Nice zwischenzug at the end.
Jun-24-16  drleper: <Phony Benoni> When I search for "Brexit" I don't see anything about Game of Thrones, just links about the British exit from the European Union (aka Brexit). Maybe Winter is the Brit exiting, since he lost? No idea really.
Jun-24-16  Robert Samuels: <Phony Benoni> It's not an inside joke for us Brits. We're not inside any more.
Jun-24-16  The HeavenSmile: the game was played in London and today is the day that the UK found out the result of the EU referendum vote. I guess that's the link. Unfortunately, its just another reminder that our country is full of ill educated, bigoted, right wing, paranoid xenophobes that have plunged us into another financial and cultural dark age. Not something i wanted to be reminded off over my breakfast. Not even a particularly exciting game

  piltdown man: A timely pun.

offramp: Today was a day when the lunatics took over the asylum. Cambridge vs Bedlam Asylum, 1883 should've been GoTD.
Jun-24-16  goodevans: <The HeavenSmile> Not full of, but unfortunately they do seem to be in the majority. I have a family engagement at the weekend and I'm not looking forward to being in the company of my gloating sister!

Incidentally, she isn't ill-educated but fits the rest of your description to a tee.

Phony Benoni: My apologies for the foolish statement. When I saw "Brexit is Coming", I assumed it referred to a parody of a pun from last year,"Winter is Coming". Very bad on my part.

It seems to me you just made the mistake of assuming the pun was better than it was. That's nothing to be ashamed of, except maybe as the triumph of hope over experience.

Jun-24-16  thegoodanarchist: Here White creates a passed pawn in an uncommon way. Very interesting.
Jun-24-16  kevin86: White had a passed pawn from move fifteen when black ignored it.
Jun-24-16  lakshashishu: Nice pun!!
if Trump wins US2016,"trumpcard" should be next GOTD:)
Jun-24-16  morfishine: <The HeavenSmile> Well, anything on the right is much preferred to anything on the left. Thats a given when one takes into account basic reasoning, logic, ability to analyze critically, practicality, feasibility, fiscal responsibility, etc.
Jun-24-16  posoo: da old posoo is NOT happy about da broxot. POSOO HIMSELF is an ilegal immagrant and NO ONE ever bothered ME. I like to wonder around da world and now dat is even HARDER.

Crusty old bafoons think dat da mooslams are ruining EVERYTHING but it is really da crustoy old tumpostos THEMSELVES who are to blame

Jun-24-16  gars: Very good pun!
Jun-24-16  Pawn Slayer: @The HeavenSmile,offramp

I went to bed last night feeling pleasantly assured that our place in the EU was safe. I was looking forward to contacting an investor in Hong Kong to confirm that he would now be reassured enough to invest in my firm.

I woke up to the result and an e-mail confirming that he's not proceeding.

Thanks a bundle to the old f***s, the uneducated and the xenophobic masses who voted to leave.

As for the game, Vera Menchik was clearly a very strong lady player.

maxi: People in Europe and the US are not happy with the status quo and immigration issues, and are looking for a change in things. But it is a mistake to believe that a radical change is going to be for the better. Ask the Venezuelans with Chavez, or the Germans with Hitler, or so many other nations throughout history, that discover that what they had wasn't as bad as what they got.
