Is there a problem with 26...Nxg1? Black played 26...Qf3

There is probably little difference between those ideas; White is move-bound. It should be mentioned that Radulov had plenty of time left on his clock.

The English-language tournament book gives the concluding moves beginning with 25....Nh4 without comment, while citing Radulov's annotations in <The Chess Player>. I have one or two of those about, that issue possibly being one.

Oct-28-24  TheaN: Actually missed this for a while, considering Qd1+ and Rb1+ are also Monday ideas. Even just wanted to settle on Qxg2+ for a while but when I realized that wasn't really flashy I suddenly spotted <30....Qxc3 -#10>. Obviously 31.Bxc3 Rb1+ 32.Be1 Rxe1# and else Qxa1+, Qe1# and/or Nxg2 will follow.

takebackok: Think a little win a piece and mate soon Monday, 30...Qxc3
Oct-28-24  stacase: OK, it took a little while, C2H5OH aside. Dunno if it would have been faster, but 30...Qxc3 threatens mate and it doesn't look like white has got an answer other than tipping his King over and shouting why must I loose to people like you or some such. A little more Tuesdayish than is usual for Monday. But quite satisfying in spite of the aforementioned mental fuzzyness.
Oct-28-24  saturn2: Qxc3 destroying the guard of the backrank and also the Ba1 will fall.
Oct-28-24  mel gibson: That was easy.

Stockfish 17 says mate in 11:

30. .. Qxc3

(30. .. Qxc3 (1. ... Qxc3 2.h3 Qxa1+ 3.Kh2 Rb1 4.Rg1 Rxg1 5.Qxg1 Nf3+ 6.Kg2 Nxg1 7.f3 Qe1 8.f4 Ne2 9.Kf3 Nxf4 10.a4 Qe2+ 11.Kg3 Qg2+) +M11/61 11)

Oct-28-24  King.Arthur.Brazil: Direct: 30...Qxc3 31. Bxc3 Rb1+ and mate next.

Teyss: After discarding other moves I saw 30...Qxc3 and thought "What, that's it? Winning a mere Knight? With a measly Queen sac?" because I thought the defence 31.Qd1 would hold.

But is doesn't: 31...Qf3! (aha, a cool Q sac) 32.Qf1 (forced) Rb1! followed by mate.

<stacase: (...) C2H5OH> I had to Wikipedia that one. Fun euphemism. You should stick to H2O on Sunday evenings.

Oct-28-24  Lambda: C2H5OH seems a weird way of putting it. If you're going to include structure, then CH3CH2OH seems the way to go. Or CCOH on the basis of ignoring C-H bonds.
Oct-28-24  Mayankk: Black wants to play 30 ... Rb1+ but White Knight is defending that square. So we attack the defender first by 30 ... Qxc3, followed by 31 Bxc3 Rb1+ 32 Be1 Rxe1#.

Anything else loses too much material and not worth continuing.

I'd argue that in this case Black doesn't have to do much to follow up 30....Qxc3 to win as long as the queen's not just lost outright because the White position is a complete mess: Ba1 is buried, Rg2 as good as and the queen's defending.

31.Qd1 Qf3 is fastest, but look at 31....Nf3+ for example:

32.Kf1? Qxc4+ with Rb1#, and in case of 32.Kh1, Black even has the very unspectacular 32....Qe1+ 33.Qxe1 Nxe1 to simplify, or 32....Qb3 threatening Qb1 and forcing a queen trade anyway.

Oct-28-24  Tiggler: I would never has solved this, were it not Monday. I tried all sorts of nonsense before remembering that on Monday one has to sacrifice the queen, and that's it of course.
