tpstar: White has a Pawn and a bind, yet what's the winning line?
Oct-13-04  miniSkirt: throwing away 1.2 million$ at kasparov!! outrageous! prague reunification agreement! @#$%$#... kasparov shd play with players of a comparable stature... when was the last time he faced kramnik/anand/leko/moro/adams... getting him to play with a 2650 player!! they might as well invite kasparov over for lunch and hand him over the $1.2 million

Actually no (forced) line is there. Short made the illegal 24... 0-0-0 here and after seeing it's illegal he resigned (the only legal king move, 24...Kd7, loses, though I have to confess I don't understand why ;))

fredthebear: After 24...Kd7, 25.Nf4 pesters the Black queen and gains the d-pawn. This leaves White with connected passed pawns in the center. An amateur would need to be aware of 25...Qg4 threatening mate on g2. 26.Qxd4+ takes care of that matter, but capturing the d-pawn w/the White knight would be a fatal blunder.

The long and short of it here is that Nigel was wise to resign after the illegal castling attempt because 24...Kd7 is a losing position.

woldsmandriffield: This game was played in the last round and a win for Short would have resulted in the GM title. The tournament was held in a Brighton hotel with a creaky floor. Several journalists turned up to cover the 'prodigy gets a GM' story - they could have packed up and gone home early after 16..Ndb8. Black's last practical chance looks to be 15..Bc5! 16 dxc5 Qb4. The final position is hopeless whatever Short plays.
