Kibitzer's Corner
Aug-20-04  Whitehat1963: Interesting game, but is this really a Sicilian?
Aug-20-04  Jack Rabbit: It's a closed Siclian, which is quite a different animal from the usual open Sicilian. The only thing the closed and open Sicilians have in common with each other is that they characteristically begin 1. e4 c5. Otherwise, notice that after Black's seventh move, the position looks like it could have grown out of a King's Indian Defense (except that White's c-Pawn is at home and Black hasn't castled). The opening could just as easily be classified as a King's Indian Attack.
Apr-12-10  Everett: What is stopping white from playing 12.Nfxe5? The text allows 12..Be6, and black is comfortable.
Apr-12-10  Everett: Forget what I wrote...

If 12.Nfxe5 Bxe5! 13.Nxe5 Nxe5 14.Bxa8 Be6 and black has a piece for the pawn.

I think Bronstein understood both sides of the KID slightly better than Larsen, though the latter was superior in Benoni-type structures.

Dec-20-10  Everett: Actually, looking at this again... After <12.Nfxe5 Bxe5! 13.Nxe5 Nxe5 14.Bxa8 Be6> material would be roughly even, but just like most GM games, the near equal material is not going to protect white's light squares. To avoid immediate disaster Larsen would have to play 15.Qd1 Qxa8 16.f3 <16.f4 Bg4> when black is in control.
Dec-20-10  Everett: Well, after checking with a program, it looks like Larsen SHOULD have taken the pawn, as after <12.Nfxe5 Bxe5> white has 13.Bg5! which handcuffs Bronstein's Nd7 and causes general problems down the e-file after Rfe1.

Because of this line, it is better for black to play 11..Rb8

Aug-01-13  jerseybob: It may just be personal taste, but to me, 3.g3 is weaker than 3.Nf3, and 3..d5 highlights that weakness. After 3.Nf3,d5 4.e5. To me, the e-pawn is one of the key players in a K.I.A. position, and I don't like parting with it unless there's a good reason.
Oct-29-19  Retireborn: Larsen mishandles his knights with 19.Na3 and 28.Nh3.

Bronstein then wins comfortably, but he misses the most elegant line; 28...Rxd3! 29.Bxf4 Rxh3 30.Rxh3 Nxh3 31.Kxh3 Nd3 32.Kg3 Nxf4 33.Rxf4 Be5!

I think an Alekhine or a Fischer would not have missed this.
