scormus: 14 Nd2 saves W's LSB but would give away so much of the initiative that I thought 14 Bd2 was most likely, partly as is prepares for a later O-O-O, thinking to follow with 15 Qg4+. After that I was unsure about most of W's moves in this very sharp tactical game.

Chess was different in 1839. I see the KGA was by far the possible popular line for both W and B in Baron Tassilo's games.

Oct-26-24  mel gibson: You had to get of check but which choice?

Stockfish 17 says:

14. c3

(14. c3 (1.c3 Qxc4 2.Qg4+ Nf5 3.Ng5+ Kd7 4.Qxc4 h6 5.Nf7 Rg8 6.Bd2 Ke7 7.Qg4 Bc8 8.Nd6 g6 9.Nxc8+ Rxc8 10.c4 Nb6 11.0-0-0 Ke8 12.Be3 h5 13.Qe4 Rg7 14.Bxb6 axb6 ) +6.93/43 498)

score for White +6.93 depth 43.

Not so soon.
I forced SF17 to play the game ply and it is actually ever so slightly better for White:

14. Bd2 Qxc4

(14. .. Qxc4 (1. ... Qxc4 2.Qg4+ Nf5 3.Ng5+ Kd7 4.Qxc4 Re8 5.0-0-0 Kc8 6.Nf7 Be7 7.Nxh8 Rxh8 8.Ba5 Kb8 9.Kb1 Ka8 10.g3 h5 11.Ka1 g5 12.Rhe1 g4 13.Qe4 Rf8 14.a3 h4 ) -7.10/47 498)

offramp: Yesterday's Move of the day had a similar first move, i.e. the king was in check. Can you remember? The move was ...Kh8.

Whoever thought that up, she was very clever.

Oct-26-24  King.Arthur.Brazil: The King is not much inspired today, maybe a little sleepy. I thought about 14. Kd1 Qxc4 15. Nd6 Qa6 16. Re1... O don't feel convinced on 16. 16. Qf7+ Kxe5 17. Re1+?! for what? Didn't see a mate combination...
