Apr-15-14  Mating Net: Since today is tax day, this game deserves special mention. I'm sure that White felt the same way I'm feeling today, utterly helpless.
May-23-14  gabriel112000: White is totally squeezed.
Aug-22-14  Robed.Bishop: You are all wrong - it ended in Zukzwang.
Sep-02-15  consul: I was redirected here by a comment on another game of the day. I think that the preceding comment could be added next time this will be GOTD once again: The tomb game - A Zukzwang. Provided that word-joke wasn't used before.

Quite true.

Phony Benoni: 3rd time as GOTD, and fine with me. It never fails to raise a smile. Everything sems so innocent until slowly...
Jun-29-16  AlicesKnight: On the Zugzwang point I am largely with <Once> and <Phony Benoni>. In the game why does White remove his Q from the action, after opening the centre, with 23.Qa4? - six moves later the mausoleum is taking shape.

offramp: <Robed.Bishop: You are all wrong - it ended in Zukzwang.>

You are right; that would be a far better pun for this game. This should really only be used as GoTD at Halloween, when it was played.

Jun-29-16  Eusebius: I just would have surrendered earlier.
Jun-29-16  clement41: Another famous zugzwang game is Chigorin-Schiffers, 1-0,1900, italian game: http://www.chessworld.net/chessclub...

42 Rg5! finishes black off at once

Oddly, this game doesn't seem to show up in CG's database

Jun-29-16  The Kings Domain: Not much of a Trick or Treat for white, his pieces at the corner pocket of the board look like terrified civilians huddled during a massive bombing assault. One of the most unique and amusing games in the the sport's history.

hansj: One of my favorite games. Best played over at Halloween
Jun-29-16  kevin86: A great game for its humor alone. White must move the queen where she can be captured by a PAWN!
Jun-29-16  Once: And if that wasn't grisly enough, this is how it might end:

40. a6 Kf8 41. Qh3 gxh3 42. Kh2 Qxg2#

If we are being really sadistic, we might drag it out with 42...hg. If white tries 43. g4, we play 43...Qxg4 and arrive here:

White has to play a knight move and allow 44...Rh1#

Nasty

alexmagnus: < <Zugzwang> and <Sacrifice> are Fine Arts. Nobody agrees on the definiton, but everybody knows one when they see it.>

In case of zugzwang - the definition is simple - a position in which passing the move is better than making any move (f.x., any move loses and a pass would draw). But the actual zugzwang happens so rarely that people like calling any hopeless position a zugzwang. Even the "immortal zugzwang game" is not a zugzwang.

Jun-29-16  morfishine: <alexmagnus> Z is not a position where "any move loses", which carries the connotation of immediate mate, but is a position where any move results in significant loss of material leading to ultimate loss and/or mate

Sometimes after the loss of material, the game can drag on for quite awhile

alexmagnus: <morfishine> By "loses" I mean the objective eveluation of the position being a loss (whereas passing a move would create a position that is drawn or won for the passer). Another case is a position where any move draws and passing would win.
Jun-30-16  KID Slayer: Although I love beating the KID all the time (though not with the Korchnoi Attack that looks far too slow to start the queenside assault), this is quite possibly the greatest and funniest zugzwang game I've seen.

Perhaps 23.Re1 (not 23.Qa4?, which ignores the threats that Black has in store on the kingside) would have spared White any troubles by preventing the key 23...Qe7 that allows Black to swoop his queen over to e3 and clog up White's kingside's surroundings.

Jun-30-16  Moszkowski012273: Best move of the game ='s 32...h6

Korora: After 40. axb6 axb6, White to move and play like NN.
Sep-15-20  MordimerChess: This game is really awesome, what and sadistic way to finish the game. I was thinking about bringing the knight and deliver the checkmate but maybe it would be too long.

Anyway, full video analysis of this game:

Enjoy!

Feb-02-21  backyard pawn: I know it's too late for this, but "The Immortal Zukzwang Game" would be a nice title.

Aug-29-24  Nasruddin Hodja: Meh. Since I'm a fan of the classics rather than Halloween references or lame puns (yes, I've submitted my share of the latter), I would go with renaming this game "Antony and Cleopatra". The final position fits.
