I plunked down $5.00(I think) and I was in. The game was a Lopez, Berlin Classical(1.e4,e5 2.Nf3,Nc6 3.Bb5,Bc5 4.c3,Nf6) and I won in 37 moves. The game was played on 8-23-70, and 8 days later I was in the U.S. Army. . |

After 2 months at lovely Ft. Dix, I spent 3 months at Arlington Hall Station, HQ of the Army Security Agency(at the time), then on to East Africa for a 2 1/2-year stretch with AFRTS Asmara, Ethiopia(now Eritrea). The DC chess scene - Va/Md/DC - was vibrant, and I was initially sad to leave, but Africa was a world I'd never imagined. I was instantly hooked on it. |

My major fault: I took losses too seriously, and instead of being strengthened and resolving to do better, I'd get depressed. Overseas I played a lot of correspondence and did quite well. |
