(but not Erich Eliskases) ... Steiner was chosen to represent Australia, and O'Kelly and Eliskases were replaced by Pirc and Lundin. The plan was that the top five from Saltsjobaden and the five (or, as it turned out, four) losers of the FIDE World Championship Tournament (1948) would compete in the Budapest Candidates (1950). Mar-06-25    HSOL: <stone free or die>: Given the book on the collectorshop webpage is most definitely in Swedish, I wonder what the source is for the information about the Saltsjöbaden interzonal on the webpage. I browsed rather shallowly some issues of the Swedish chess federation magazine from 1948 (Tidskrift för schack). It says only 4 zonals were played and one of the winners (which I assume was O'Kelly) was not able to participate so FIDE chose 17 of the participants with a vote. If so, I just assume they used a translation from Stahlberg's tb. But your post has prompted me to think of another option - that perhaps they copied <CG>? Mar-07-25    Olavi: The Stahlberg tournamert book has nothing of the sort. The 'zonal performances' is, I believe, pure fabrication. There were four zonals and the rest of 20 players were always meant to be selected by a FIDE qualifications committee; they acknowledged that for this first cycle that has to do and that additional zonals will be planned and held from the next cycle on.
