Sep-09-05  ReikiMaster: Stalemate once counted as victory but no more. Is there a short notation for it?

Sneaky: Not that I know of. The ECO volumes have a preface that describes every chess symbol under the sun, from "zugzwang" (a circle with a dot in it) to "separated pawns" (looks like a dumb bell).

Oddly, there is not a symbol for stalemate.

Sep-09-05  azaris: Where would you need a symbol for stalemate in an opening encyclopedia? Besides, it's pretty self-evident so "1/2-1/2" should suffice. Although the same could be said for "#"!

LOL. Good point!

Apr-20-06  Richerby: `Informator' gives comments on games using symbols instead of words, so there's no need for translation. A symbol for stalemate would be just as useful there as the symbol for checkmate, I suppose. But there's a tradition of annotating checkmate and no apparent tradition of doing the same for stalemate, perhaps because stalemate is pretty rare in practice.

offramp: The symbol for stalemate is a miniature Ford Edsel grille.
