Player: Bartholomew O'Sullivan

 | | perfidious: Bit surprising to see Szabo never be in contention at Hilversum; one would have expected him to qualify. |
Mar-05-25
 | | Tabanus: Well he played in Saltsjobaden Interzonal (1948) anyway. |
Mar-05-25
 | | perfidious: A la Spassky, following his plus one at Manila Interzonal (1976), a solid enough score, but hardly what one would have expected of, in his case, a title contender. |

 | | Tabanus: It may be that Budapest (1948) was also a zonal? |
Mar-05-25 | | HSOL: <Tabanus>: A bit of research on Mark Weeks' site tells that 16 players (including Szabo) were invited to the Saltsjöbaden Interzonal by FIDE (after a ballot among the FIDE delegates) to add to the few players qualifying by zonals (not that many zonals were played) |
Mar-05-25 | | stone free or die: <Tab>, this tidbit is suggestive as regards <Budapest (1948)>: Budapest (1948) (kibitz #1) |
Mar-05-25
 | | perfidious: <HSOL....(not that many zonals were played)> This is logical, given that this was the first cycle the world championship was held under the auspices of FIDE. |
Mar-05-25 | | HSOL: According to the comments on the Budapest 1948 tournament page it might be more of a gray area regarding this FIDE selection with "zonal performances" being a significant part in the election of players than the information I found on Mark Weeks' World Championship site and wikipedia about the Saltsjöbaden 1948 Interzonal |
Mar-06-25 | | stone free or die: Yes, according to the <Saltsjobaden> tb the "zonals" had a component of aspirational - <" (but not the winner Alberic O'Kelly de Galway). ... (but not Erich Eliskases) ...Steiner was chosen to represent Australia, and O'Kelly and Eliskases were replaced by Pirc and Lundin. The plan was that the top five from Saltsjobaden and the five (or, as it turned out, four) losers of the FIDE World Championship Tournament (1948) would compete in the Budapest Candidates (1950). But on 12 August, before the penultimate round, FIDE decided that nine players could go to the Candidates. > https://chesscollectorshop.com/prod... |

Mar-06-25 | | HSOL: <stone free or die>: Given the book on the collectorshop webpage is most definitely in Swedish, I wonder what the source is for the information about the Saltsjöbaden interzonal on the webpage. I browsed rather shallowly some issues of the Swedish chess federation magazine from 1948 (Tidskrift för schack). It says only 4 zonals were played and one of the winners (which I assume was O'Kelly) was not able to participate so FIDE chose 17 of the participants with a vote. Mar-07-25 | | stone free or die: <<HSOL> I wonder what the source is for the information about the Saltsjöbaden interzonal on the webpage. > Are you talking about the <chesscollectorshop> website? If so, I just assume they used a translation from Stahlberg's tb. But your post has prompted me to think of another option - that perhaps they copied <CG>? I suppose it's a possibility that I should have considered. |
Mar-07-25 | | stone free or die: (Of course my alternative conjecture still begs the question of if the material was copied from the tb. If the book site did the original copying it would be ok and assumed. <CG> not so much either way, unless the material didn't come from the tb) |
Mar-07-25 | | Olavi: I'll check the Stahlberg tb later today. |
Mar-07-25 | | Olavi: The Stahlberg tournamert book has nothing of the sort. The 'zonal performances' is, I believe, pure fabrication. There were four zonals and the rest of 20 players were always meant to be selected by a FIDE qualifications committee; they acknowledged that for this first cycle that has to do and that additional zonals will be planned and held from the next cycle on. |
