Domdaniel: <avari viraf> O'Sullivan was not a *bad* player -- in the 1970s I played people who had known him, and I was intrigued by earlier Irish players. His British opponent here, by the way, also qualifies as 'Irish', having (like me) been born in Cork.

But Irish players rarely played in international tournaments in those days, and the step up in level was seemingly too much for O'Sullivan. He was out of his depth in the Hilversum zonal, and lost almost all his games.

Several were calamities like this. As a result, Harry Golombek said that "O'Sullivan's play was rather worse than his score".

He drew one game out of 13, and lost the rest. To play 'worse' than 0.5/13 is an achievement of sorts.
