🏆 Ostend (1905) Chess Event Description
The first in a planned series of three international chess master tournaments held in the coastal town of Ostend, Belgium was conducted at the local casino from June 12th to July 18th, 1905. Fourteen chess masters were invited to participate in the double round robin event, including major participants and earlier winners of the Monte Carlo tournament series of the previous four years. First, 5,000 francs and a gold medal; second, 3,000; third, 2,000; fourth, 1,200; fifth, 900; sixth, 700; seventh, 500; eighth, 400; ninth, 350; tenth, 300; eleventh, 250; twelfth, 200; thirteenth, 175; fourteenth, 150.

Special prizes were awarded as follows:
250 francs, donated by Prof. Isaac L. Rice, to D. Janowski for the game, Janowski vs. Tarrasch.

100 francs, donated by A. Oppenheimer, to J.H. Blackburne for the game, Marshall vs. Blackburne.

100 francs, donated by A. Hallgarten, to M.I. Tschigorin for the game, Tschigorin vs. Marco.

In addition to the foregoing, special awards were made for the games mentioned below: 150 francs to F.J. Marshall (Marshall vs. Burn); 100 francs to C. Schlechter (Schlechter vs. Janowski); 100 francs to G. Maroczy (Maroczy vs. Leonhardt); 100 francs to Dr. S. Tarrasch (Maroczy vs. Tarrasch); 50 francs to R. Teichmann (Teichmann vs. Tschigorin); 50 francs to G. Marco (Wolf vs. Marco); 50 francs to P.S. Leonhardt (Leonhardt vs. Tarrasch); 50 francs to A. Burn (Tschigorin vs. Burn); 50 francs to S. Alapin (Alapin vs. Marshall).
