Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
Niemeyer Juniors 1970/71

"Three years ago, the tournament organizers implemented a new initiative. Based on a regulation approved by FIDE, they expanded the tournament into a youth European cup championship, to which they naturally invited the youth champions and best youth competitors from all European countries. This has led to a rapid increase in the number of participants. This year's 9th Niemeyer tournament saw 26 competitors from 24 countries. The Netherlands, as the organizer, was allowed to enter two competitors and the Federal Republic of Germany also had two representatives, because the Romanian Urzica's participation was cancelled at the last minute, but the seven-round Swiss semi-final is of course easier to organize with an even number of participants. The name of the tournament still includes the word Niemeyer, as well as the expression "cup tournament", referring to the cup awarded to the winner by FIDE - in addition to the other prizes provided by the organizers. However, the tournament is a European youth championship in nature. What was striking about the tournament almost from the first rounds was the very high standard of the participants. It is true that there were some who had already successfully participated in the adult championships of their city or country, or who had played for their country at the last Chess Olympiad in Siegen. However, there was only one international master, the Hungarian Zoltan Ribli." (Tibor Florian in Sakkélet, transl.)

This was the 9th Niemeyer sponsored tournament, also named European Junior Cup. Nine rounds in 10 days, starting on Wednesday 30 December (45 games). Rest day 3 January. Participants were the top 10 finishers from the Niemeyer Juniors Preliminary (1970) (21-28 December). Tournament director: Johan Zwanepol. Ribli won with 7.5/9.

There was also a B tournament for places 11-20 (won by Andreas Huss) and a C tournament for places 21-26.
