Nov-21-07 | | cotdt: Shark should have played his 1.b3 in their real game, hehe. |
Nov-21-07 | | notyetagm: <cotdt: Kamsky and Grischuk have 12 points after Round 18, Ivanchuk leading with 13 points> Great first half for Chucky, +8(!) (13-5).

Nov-21-07 | | KamikazeAttack: Amazing how 3 of the slowest classical chess players (Gris, Kamsky & Leko) are kicking butt in blitz. |

 | | al wazir: <nikolajewitsch: Lets start a collection by that very name!> That's fine by me. I don't know how to find them in the <CG> database, but some people either have more sophisticated tools or are working with other databases (see, e.g., the post by <Marvol> on p. 45). |
Nov-21-07 | | brankat: <al wazir><nikolajewitsch> On page 47 I posted links to, I think, 6 collections I found here. There may be more of the type. --- From the menu at the bottom of the screen choose "Game Collections" option (to the right hand side corner). --- Then in the blank field I typed in "Draw collections". Got a list of a couple of dozens of Collections, not all of them "Draw" ones. --- The same works with other types of collections. Just type in a word/phrase that best describes the kind of collection(s) You're looking for: Fischer, Alekhine, Rook Endings etc.. |

Nov-21-07 | | cotdt: <KamikazeAttack: Amazing how 3 of the slowest classical chess players (Gris, Kamsky & Leko) are kicking butt in blitz.> Amazing how other than Grischuk, they are older than Kramnik. Didn't Kramnik say that he wouldn't be able to keep up because everyone is younger than him? |
Nov-21-07 | | babakova: Leko is four years younger than Kramnik I think. |

 | | al wazir: <brankat>: Thanks! |
Nov-21-07 | | Marvol: <al wazir: but some people either have more sophisticated tools or are working with other databases (see, e.g., the post by <Marvol> on p. 45).> I just got these data (on Tal's short draws I s'pose you mean?) from the CG.com database. Of course, <interesting> draws are difficult to find using the CG.com search but <short> ones in a <given period> - no problem :). |
Nov-21-07 | | acirce: <The main thing that will happen if draw offers are banned is an increase in time-trouble-induced endgame blunders. Great, I'm looking forward to that.> Draw offers will apparently be banned in FIDE's Grand Prix series in 2008/2009, meant to be an important part of the World Championship cycle (the Grand Prix winner playing a match against the World Cup winner for the right to challenge the World Champion). See http://fide.com/official/handbook/p... Haven't taken the time to investigate the full details of the whole system. Anyway, I am fairly skeptical that this project will even be realized in its intended form. |
Nov-21-07 | | brankat: No Draw offers? That's for idiots. What are they going to have? Arbitration? A bunch of amateur referees to assess GMs games? Or perhaps run tablebases? Or force the players to keep on playing till they bleed? I sure like hell hope this doesn't work. |
Nov-21-07 | | Jim Bartle: The players will give each other knowing looks, then repeat moves three times. |
Nov-21-07
 | | al wazir: My aim throughout this tedious squabble has been to suggest ways to give players a stronger incentive to play for a win, not to change the rules of the game. Draws are part of the game. So are incentives. GMs play for glory and for money -- but mainly for the money, IMO. There are many examples of a player going all-out to win because he needed the point to finish higher in the standings (and the money). And there are even more examples of players taking cheap draws because the result didn't affect their standings or pocketbook. |
Nov-22-07 | | shintaro go: where's the "by a whopping 1.5 points" comment they gave to Topalov |
Nov-22-07 | | Jim Bartle: al wazir: I'm not sure it's still true, but in years past players at Linares knew that if they played short draws they wouldn't be invited the next year. I call that a pretty good incentive. Of course the organizer Rentero overstepped one year when putting on the Women's WC match, trying to fine the players for agreeing to short draws. |
