Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
Bergen Chess International (2001)

Eirik T. Gullaksen reports: GMs Arthur Kogan (ISR 2517) and Evgenij Agrest (SWE 2529) shared first place in the second Bergen Chess International, played in Norway 4th-12th August 2001. Both scored eight points from nine games, with impressive rating performances of 2760 (Kogan) and 2730 (Agrest). The tournament had the status of Nordic Championship 2001 and being the best Nordic player (NOR/SWE/FIN/DEN/ISL/FAI) Agrest won the title of Nordic Champion 2001. In third place with seven points came the best Norwegian player, IM Leif Erlend Johannessen (2426). Top seed GM Vladimir Georgiev (BUL 2584) had to settle for 5.5 points and a somewhat disappointing shared 16th place. The tournament had 94 participants, including 8 GMs and 13 IMs. There were 9 women playing, which must be a new record in a Norwegian tournament. Arnar Gunnarson of Iceland made an IM-norm and Katarzyna Toma of Poland a WIM-norm.
