Jan-17-25
 | | Dionysius1: L'Ami, Bok and Swayne are the only ones I've heard of. Of those, maybe L'Ami. |
Jan-17-25
 | | Troller: Yakubboev is pretty strong, he beat Wei Yi not that long ago: N Yakubboev vs Wei Yi, 2024 Ediz Gurel is only 17 and already #1 in Turkey. Nguyen seems to have been around a long time but he is only 23; should not be counted out either. Suleymanli? 2637 at age 19 is not too shabby. Nguyen, Yakubboev, Svane, Gurel would be my list of favourites in this order. L'Ami is a strong GM but I doubt he can withstand all these hungry youngsters. |
Jan-18-25 | | dehanne: Little Lu bagged a GM scalp. |
Jan-19-25 | | Chessinfinite: <..Who is the best player in the Challangers?> are you asking for an answer before the winner is decided or a people's opinion ? Care to give an answer yourself ?..
I cannot think of anyone in this list.. |
Jan-19-25
 | | Open Defence: I would be watching R Vaishali and Divya Deshmukh's progress in this tournament, it is an interesting field they are in |
Jan-20-25 | | Chessinfinite: Thank you. The names I recognize is that of Vaishali, Erwin Lami and the wonder kid Faustino Its still early, but I am curious how Faustino does. |
Jan-20-25 | | notyetagm: <Chessinfinite: ... Its still early, but I am curious how Faustino does.> I am rooting for him but he has started 0/2.
In Round 3 he plays the only other player with 0, Bulmaga, so something has to give, |
Jan-20-25
 | | Open Defence: Vaishali in trouble against Nogerbek |
Jan-20-25 | | notyetagm: White went <7-0> in Round 3. Yikes! |
Jan-20-25 | | whiteshark: In today's third round, <all> games were won by <White>! |
Jan-20-25
 | | perfidious: Adorjan would likely say: <Black is OK> anyway. |
Jan-20-25 | | dehanne: Another GM scalp for Miss Lu. |
Jan-21-25
 | | An Englishman: Good Evening: And good heavens, that's 9 wins for White in rounds 2 & 3. Yikes. |
Jan-23-25
 | | Troller: So far User: Dionysius1 is a better prophet than me with Erwin on top of the leaderboard. Nice to see a veteran doing well though. Btw Bok is born in 1995, by these new standards he is also close to being "veteran" I suppose, what with 11-year-old kids playing the Challengers... |
Jan-23-25
 | | Open Defence: Divya Deshmukh is not having a great time thus far but R Vaishali is on 3/5 Faustino Oro has impressed though only 1.5/5 but he is 11! so will improve I think, great to see the immense young talent out there |
Jan-24-25 | | notyetagm: Good job, Oro!
Got his 2nd win today, beating Divya, so he is back to even. +2 =1 -0 for Oro after an 0/2 start.
https://lichess.org/broadcast/tata-... |
Feb-01-25 | | notyetagm: Lu now needs to go <2/2> this weekend to get a GM norm. First 3 games: +2 =1 -0
Last 8 games: +1 =4 -3
Overall record: +3 =5 -3
She needs to finish +2 (7.5/13) for the GM norm and is currently at +0 after 11 rounds. Tata Steel Challengers (2025)/Miaoyi Lu |
Feb-01-25 | | notyetagm: Oro beat Lu today so no GM norm for her.
https://lichess.org/broadcast/tata-... She started out 2.5/3 but then won only 1 game of her next 9. |
Feb-01-25 | | whiteshark: Question for the <swarm intelligence>: In the challenger tournament, only the winner gets a place in next year's Masters. We now have three table leaders before the last round. So what is the <selection process> if there is still a tie at the end of the tournament? Bok vs Nguyen could be extra spicy |
Feb-02-25
 | | Teyss: Hi whiteshark,
In case of tie, the selection of the winner is based on:
1. Direct encounter. Doesn't apply to the three leaders.
2. Sonneborn-Berger. So far Suleymanli has the best. https://chess-results.com/tnr110161...
3. Player with more games with black.
4. Drawing of lots.

Feb-02-25 | | whiteshark: Thanks <Teyss>, I never paid attention to the TB columns at chess-result before. That won't happen in the future. ;) I assume that the TB has to be set up individually for each tournament, and that makes me respect this work even more. |
Feb-02-25 | | whiteshark: Suleymanli won against Bulmaga +1 SB point.
Now L'Ami and Nguyen are under pressure to deliver: L'Ami is - 2 right now but Vaishali is playing on increments
Bok-Nguyen is a ♖♗(opp col)+6♙:4♙ , abt =
If both were to win after all, they would overtake Suleymanli in the TB... |
Feb-02-25 | | whiteshark: Nguyen beat Bok, boosting his TB with 8 point for 1st place!! CONGRATS L'Ami is -10 but still hoping... |
Feb-02-25 | | notyetagm: Notable finishes.
Suleymanli: last 6 games went <+5 =1 -0> to tie for first Lu: last 6 games went <+0 =2 -4> to miss a GM norm by 2 points Bulmaga: worst score I have ever seen in Challengers, winless -11 <+0 =2 -11> |
Feb-03-25
 | | Teyss: And Thai Dai Van Nguyen wins by a better Sonneborn-Berger, just 0.75 point over Aydin Suleymanli. This is important as he qualifies for the Masters 2026 and gains points for the FIDE Circuit (although he's unlikely to qualify for the Candidates). https://chess-results.com/tnr110161... |
