Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
European Junior Championship Preliminary (1971)

"The Groningen International Youth Tournament was held for the tenth time, and from modest beginnings it has developed into an official European Youth Championship. On the occasion of the anniversary, Grandmaster Dr. Max Euwe, President of FIDE, rightly mentioned at the opening ceremony that many of the participants of previous years are now among the top players not only in their countries but also in the world. Hübner (West Germany), Karpov and Vaganian (Soviet Union), Ljubojevic (Yugoslavia) have won the title of International Grandmaster. The number of International Masters is even higher, among whom it is enough to mention the names of Andersson (Sweden), Ree, Hartoch (Netherlands), Adorján and Ribli. In addition to the qualitative development, there was of course also a huge increase in quantity: 30 competitors from 28 European countries started at the 10th tournament. Wales was the last to enter, making the number of participants an odd number, so another West German competitor was invited by telegram to the neighboring West Germany (the Dutch organizers can enter two competitors)."
