Introduction
The summer meeting of the New York State Chess association was formally opened this morning at the Packwood house under circumstances of unusual interest. Only a week ago it looked as if the chief competition, the state championship for the Staats Zeitung cup, would be a walk over for the champion of the Manhattan Chess club of New York, A. B. Hodges. Since then the Brooklyn club, which expected to be represented by De Visser, was stirred up to send their strongest local player, Philip Richardson. The Metropolitan club was also stimulated to send Eugene Delmar, and from Georgetown, Ky., J. W. Showalter wrote a day or two ago: "I will be at Skaneateles sure." (1)
The time limit in the general tournament is twenty-five moves an hour. In the cup tournament, twenty moves an hour. The managers expect to finish all the games by Friday night. (2)
Missing Games
