Match at Chess Between Mr. Staunton and Mr. Harrwitz.—We have much pleasure in announcing the settlement of preliminaries for a match, to be commenced immediately, between these gentlemen, upon terms which are calculated to give a very high degree of interest to the contest. It is finally arranged that twenty-one games shall be played. In seven of these the English player undertakes to give the odds of a Pawn and two moves; in seven the Pawn and one move; and the remaining seven are to be played even. Drawn games are not to be reckoned, and the winner of the majority on the twenty-one games is to be declared the victor.(1)

 | | MissScarlett: Illustrated London News, December 26th 1846, p.403: <[From correspondence section] Taking his information from the worst authority upon Chess matters in this country [i.e., George Walker], the Editor of "Le Palamede" has opened his "impartial" account of the Match between Mr. Staunton and Mr. Harrwitz with a misstatement, and founded upon it a very characteristic hypothesis of the cause of the German's defeat. The Match was not "finished at Brighton." It was began and finished in London. A portion of the games were played by mutual consent in the country; and these, on the part of Mr. Harrwitz, are admitted to be the best of the whole: but the first four, and the last six, were played in London; and, of these last six, with all the assistance, encouragement, and support of friends, which M. St. Amant thinks were so indispensable for him, Mr. Harrwitz lost four!> |
