0ZeR0: Of the older guard, it has been a delight to see Dominguez doing well. On the other hand Svidler seems to be struggling. But considering the opposition here, I wouldn't say it's any real failure. He's 45 years old and has had an excellent career. Aside from some extraordinary exceptions like Smyslov or Korchnoi, father time catches up eventually, often sooner rather than later.

HeMateMe: I think Svidler has won the Russian closed championships six times. That alone guarantees him a place in the sport's history. Even power houses like Karpov and Kasparov stopped playing in the Russian championships after winning the title. They didn't want to butt heads against such stiff competition for low prize money.

Yet, it was Robert Byrne who used to play in Russia when invited. He thought it improved his play, though he didn't win such tournaments..

Aug-26-21  greed and death: This last round should be interesting. MVL needs a draw against Mamedyarov to clinch a share of 1st place, but is only +2 -7 =15 against him all-time. Rapport-Caruana and So-Dominguez could also decide a winner; I think Caruana has a better chance of winning than do So or Dominguez

His biography on this site says he won it an astounding eight times. I definitely agree with you that this fact by itself cements his place in chess history.

0ZeR0: A fine job by MVL to win such a prestigious event against such opposition with a clear first. And of course even more importantly, kudos to So for winning the GCT overall.
