Stonehenge: 24th European Teams Women (2023)
Nov-12-23  Messiah: I have never ever thought that Dragnev could cheat.
Nov-12-23  fabelhaft: Carlsen channeling Steinitz like against Suleymenli, playing some super passive position thinking it won’t get too bad and that he will somehow win it eventually but it didn’t work everytime for Steinitz and it sure doesn’t work this time either, Carlsen is just dead lost.

perfidious: As Robert Ciaffone, with whom I worked in my early poker playing days, once wrote:

<If you want a man to hang himself, leave some slack in the rope>

Definitely the Steinitzian approach in his later days, particularly when facing Chigorin.

Nov-12-23  fabelhaft: Carlsen drew in the end with some help from the chess gods and Dragnev, but Norway lost the match.
Nov-14-23  fabelhaft: Radjabov is the second strongest player in the field going by the live rating list, where he is 13th. He follows his usual mode of operation from the last decade or so, with lifeless draws, all of them exactly 30 moves this time.

Seems like just yesterday when he was the brightest knight of the KID.

Seems Ivan Saric had different ideas: Saric vs Radjabov, 2023

Troller: And Radja rests today. Although he should have had a good chance of bouncing back against Denis Kadric of Montenegro.

Nov-15-23  fabelhaft: <Seems Ivan Saric had different ideas>

Yes, the last European Team Championships Radjabov scored all draws as in the first rounds here but now Saric went and destroyed it all. The last time Radjabov won a game in a European Team Championships was in 2017, against Nepo of all people.

perfidious: The wretch Saric had one helluva nerve.
Nov-15-23  AdolfoAugusto: Schitco is playing well, maybe Carlsen is not motivated?
Nov-16-23  nok: It's rather Norway playing like Schitco

.

Nov-16-23  ndg2: Germany has Assembler their best team since a long time and so far it Shows Resultat.
Nov-17-23  fabelhaft: Radjabov continues to play unimpressively, now lost after a dozen moves against Greek Theodorou.
Nov-17-23  fabelhaft: After 18 moves Theodorou has a mate in three, this must be one of Radjabov’s worse losses ever.
Nov-17-23  goodevans: N Theodorou vs Radjabov, 2023

Radja chose to partake in a well known super-sharp opening that usually peters out to a quick draw. The danger with that is that you might run into an opponent's prep you're not familiar with.

Having to navigate through a minefield ain't easy when your opponent knows where all the mines are. Didn't take Radja long to step on one.

Atterdag: Wild game this one: J B Bjerre vs Carlsen, 2023

The young Dane almost had Carlsen by the throat. However, it was the opposite between moves 14 and 30, when Carlsen played 30.-Bc6?

Great photo series on the official site. Lovely girls and ladies - they are the future of women chess.

Nov-19-23  fabelhaft: Doesn’t get more per-arranged than that, will hopefully cost both teams in the end and especially England with the much higher rated team.
Nov-19-23  fabelhaft: Ah, they now say transmission glitch and no draws.
Nov-19-23  GlennOliver: Just to note that the game 5. B Bok vs Adams is a duplicated result and also truncated.

It is the following game 6. B Bok vs Adams which gives the correct moves, ending at move 43.

Michael Adams didn't play in the first round, so the games shown are his rounds 2 - 7 inclusive.

Atterdag: At 52.Rb6 Carlsen has a winning position against Van Foreest. The real world champ has never failed to get a full point in these setups.

Atterdag: ... and 56.f4!+ was the deadly stab. Well played, Mr. Carlsen!
