Sep-27-11  technical draw: <HeMateMe> Would you say there is a plethora of new GM games, amigo?

  HeMateMe: Lo creo.
Sep-28-11  whiteshark: <technical testides> From this perspective it appears quite strange. :D
Sep-28-11  waustad: The way ratings have increased in time is rqther noticable when you see where Korchnoi's name appears in the list of players sorted by highest rating. He was in the top 2 or 3 forever but is well behind several players who haven't sniffed the top 10.
Sep-28-11  paavoh: Jakovenko-Gelfand is an intriguing endgame K + R + 4 pawns on both sides, and passers everywhere.

See Board #1 at:
http://ecc2011.sahohlacnik.com/vziv...

Sep-28-11  kellmano: <paavoh> yes very interesting. My money is on black, as the passers are further away from the opposing king.

How come their game has progressed so much further than all the others?

Sep-28-11  BUNA: Hi all. :)
Pono is in BIG trouble against Tomashevsky (although a rook up right now). Pono played the KID?! Haven't seen that before of him. > http://ecc2011.live.whychess.org/

HeMateMe: Boy, the favorites real beat the stuffing out of the 'dogs in these games. I guess the ratings gap was pretty ______________ wide, in many match ups .
Sep-29-11  kurtrichards: <ECC 2011> Anish Giri's games are all "1/2" so far... I need a "1".
Sep-29-11  paavoh: @kellmano:<How come their game ...> Did you see commenting by <tamar> on the specific game page:

D Jakovenko vs Gelfand, 2011

"Believe it or not, the first new move is 37 h3, well past the pawn sacrifice, and almost to the ending.

See Radjabov vs Kramnik, 2011

Both players knew either this game, or the overall theory by heart. It is conceivable that Jakovenko's decision to exchange Queens on move 40 was home preparation!"

Troller: Nepom is playing interesting games as always. Now in 5th round vs Rodshtein, White (Nepom) to move:

click for larger view

Time to claim some influence on the center? Why, no! 5.h4! it is. At move 8 the pawn has made it to h6, and currently at move 17, Black is trailing by 43 mins on the clock, with White having entered a double-edged position.

Sep-29-11  paavoh: Mamedjarov is crushing Grandelius in a miniature:

http://ecc2011.live.whychess.org/

Houdini says +4.46 at move 19.

Sep-29-11  whiteshark: <paavoh: Mamedjarov is crushing Grandelius in a miniature> You gotta love it. Unpredictable as ever.
Sep-30-11  waustad: Another ratings anomaly. Robert Huebner was in the top 20 for most of 15 years and according to chessmetrics ranked as high as 6th. He is behind Hammer and more than a few others who aren't close to the top 100.
Oct-01-11  waustad: Yes Grandeleus got crushed by Mamedyarov. He lost to the higher rated players, beat the lower rated players and drew with the one that was close so far. I guess that shouldn't be a surprise.
Oct-01-11  whiteshark: Mamedyarov needs some help... one day he plays a brilliancy and the very next days he blunders the pieces just like me.
Oct-01-11  Illogic: Every game decisive in the Baden vs. SOCAR match! Radjabov is on fire lately, he beat Adams with black today (Schlieman, of course) and his live rating is now 2781.
Oct-02-11  bronkenstein: Final report with several key moments and few nice photos : http://www.chessvibes.com/reports/e....

HeMateMe: Great report, superb photos. Thanks for posting this.
Oct-02-11  BUNA: The photographs are really great.
What did Shirov tell Grischuk, who looked aside? Ashamed? (second photograph) Maybe some joke about Anna Zatonskih? (number seven) :) Grischuk as always tries to be invisible (number 3).
Great.

Congratulations to St Petersburg and Teimour, who seemed to be really angry.

Oct-02-11  claynic9: Anyone know who had the best individual scores for the tournament?
Oct-03-11  freakclub: <claynic9> Radjabov has the best performance, with a score of 4.5/5 for Board 1 and a 3019 performance rating.
Oct-03-11  polarmis: Actually it looks as though the best performance overall was by Denis Khismatullin on Board 6: 3199. I guess he just won all his games!?

You can find all the details at the official website: http://ecc2011.sahohlacnik.com/

Click on "Best players after... Rd 7".

Oct-03-11  bronkenstein: IMO Radja has the best performance , since he would have reasonable chances of whitewashing everyone on board 6 , while Khismatullin would struggle to stay equal on board 1 , to say the least.
