Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Penguincw: < WannaBe: They can always do a Gordie Howe and play in the minors when they are 70s and claim they played in 6 decades. >

That reminds of when Ichiro achieved 4000 hits, Japan+MLB, and Pete Rose mentioned that his hits in MiLB should count toward his total too, since it is professional baseball. :p

On the topic of 4 decade guys, briefly looked at the list, I saw Jordan Zimmerman, but then realized it was a different one...

Does Carlos Beltran (1998-?) stand a chance?

BTW: I'm not sure if any of you are video game players, but I went to a store, and bought "MLB 10: The Show" used for, get this... $0.28 CAD (~$0.22 USD). :D I had someone test it out, it works fine.

Phony Benoni: Wikipedia has a list, of course:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_...

<JB> Rick Dempsey was the sort of guy I had in mind when suggesting Piercynzski has a chance. A good defensive catcher can play a backup role for a long time.

WannaBe: I remember Dempsey (very well, and fondly) on the '88 World Series team, very well, with Mickey Hatcher, they had a nickname "Stuntmen".

At that time, I wondered why Dodgers decided to get an old catcher that played with Baltimore Orioles.

Apr-26-16  Jim Bartle: I guess if a catcher is a backup and doesn't play too much he can stick around. Regular catchers have distinctly shorter careers than outfielders overall.

WannaBe: On that 40+ list, 29 players, 10 are in the HoF, that's about .33333333 if my bad math's correct.

Minnie Minoso? Jim Kaat? Jerry Reuss (Hello ex-Dodger) are they HoF worthy?

Discuss... =))

Apr-26-16  Jim Bartle: Ted Williams should get an asterisk, because he got to have four years off.

I'm really surprised by some of the names. Jim Kaat? Early Wynn? Bill Buckner?

Vizquel is the only middle infielder.

Surprised not to see any knuckleballers on the list though Jamie Moyer didn't throw much harder.

WannaBe: <Jim Bartle> See, that's part of the 'problem' with decades played, where "9" counts as a decade.

(But actually '0' should be the end of the decade, because we all count starting with 1, and all end with 0)...

Phil started his career in '64 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phil_...

Joe started his career in '67 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_N...

Now, if they had started just a few years later, and be able to extend their career for just a feeeeeeeew more years. =))

Apr-26-16  Jim Bartle: I was thinking of Hoyt Wilhelm, but his career started in 1952.

Wilhelm is one of 21 players to hit a home run in his first at bat and never hit another one.

Apr-27-16  Jim Bartle: Headhunter Tom Glavine throws at Dale Murphy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8h...

Pretty strange. After previous beanings, Glavine had been ordered to hit the first batter, who happened to be his longtime teammate and Atlanta icon Dale Murphy. So Glavine just tossed in four batting practice pitches inside to Murphy, got thrown out and walked off the field.

Phony Benoni: Today's Home Town Scoring: the hitter gets a double on this?

http://m.tigers.mlb.com/det/video/t...

Apr-28-16  Jim Bartle: You mean it should be a single and moving up on the throw?

The camera didn't show the play real well, but I didn't see anybody misplay the ball, except the catcher dropping the throw at home. Which probably didn't make any difference.

Phony Benoni: Yes, definitely single and batter to second on the throw.

When the throw comes in, you can see it pass right next to the batter, who is not even halfway to second. Also, the runner coming from second is very fast so if it's a close play on him at the plate no way is it a double.

Penguincw: Exactly one year ago (Apr/29/2015), there was a game (CWS@BAL), which set the MLB record for lowest attendance, of 0, due to the Baltimore protests at the time.

One year later, these 2 face again. Should be a game actually worth coming to, as these 2 are the top 2 AL teams.

Apr-29-16  Jim Bartle: I remember that. I was hoping there would be a foul ball just into the stands, and a manager would come out and argue fan interference.

Orioles broadcaster Gary Thorne did a play in his "Masters voice," whispering the play like a golf announcer:

Okay, when a (college) school is hit by sanctions, they are stripped of title, e.g. USC, Reggie Bush.

How about MLB teams forfeit the games? Think team owners and players are willing to go that far?

(I'm not bitter because Marlins' 4-game sweep them Dodgers, at all. Believe me. Not bitter one iota.)
