Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Penguincw: Where was <WannaBe> to announce that the Marlins took a no-hitter into the 9th! Marlins won 6-3, holding off a late rally (the Brewers did turn a triple play).

Jays won 6-1, yay, but Raptors led by 12, lose 101-83. Blues also lost 2-1 to Dallas. :(

Penguincw: Woo, Leafs get first pick in the NHL draft. First time since 2010 (Oilers) that the team with the worst record gets first pick. The Leafs also get first pick for the first time since 1985, when they selected Wendel Clark. Hoping Auston Matthews turns out to be good (Edmonton has enough picks).

Hoping the Leafs can turn it around. The Raptors and Leafs have turned it around with their rebuilding. In 2010, Raptors lost Bosh, and finished 22-60 in the season, but are now the only NBA team to currently win their division 3 straight seasons. They play Game 7 tomorrow. Jays (lost 4-3 today) traded Halladay away in 2010, but last season, Anthopoulos cashed in his chips, and Jays won the division.

Penguincw: 25 years ago, May/01/1991, huge day in baseball. Nolan Ryan throws his record 7th career no-hitter on the same day Rickey Henderson steals his record 939th base.

The most recent day I remember being this huge is Apr/21/2012. I remember watching on TV, Fenway Park's 100th anniversary or something, NYY @ BOS. Boston led 9-0 after like 6 innings, but ended up losing 15-9! Right after the game, it was CWS @ SEA, where Philip Humber was pitching in the 9th, and threw a perfect game.

Catcher got on base, Kershaw drove him in. 1-0 Kershaw over Padres.

Gonna be a loooooooong season.

Penguincw: Looks like career RBI #25 or 26 for Kershaw.

Seriously, pitchers are hitting really well this season.

Jays win 5-1, currently undefeated in May. ;)

WannaBe: If you looked at the box score for Kershaw, 9IP, CG, shutout, 101 pitches 75 for strike, 3H, 14K!!!

Talk about a pitching efficiency machine, wow. Would have been a "Maddux" if it was under 100 pitches...

May-01-16  Jim Bartle: Except the 14 strikeouts.

Penguincw: Raptors win, and they're moving on to face the Miami Heat! Looks like all the top seeds advanced except for the injury plagued Clippers. One heck of a series though, should be another heck of a series.

The Raptors win their first playoff series since 2001, and also break the longest active streak in the NBA without a playoff series win.

Blues also managed to tie up their series despite being forced to OT, and Blue Jays won earlier.

WannaBe: Just heard this trivia on Ucla-Utah baseball game (via announcers).

Who (Major league level) have the career record for stealing home?

(<Phony Benoni> is forbidden from answer this question).

Phony Benoni: <WannaBe> Well, if you put it like that, you're just giving it away.

But everyone already knows the answer is Snidely Whiplash. He foreclosed at least one mortgage in every episode.

May-02-16  Jim Bartle: If it's a UCLA game then it's probably Jackie Robinson.

  WannaBe: <Phony Benoni> Hehehehe...

<Jim Bartle> Jackie is tied for 9th on the 'official' list.

May-02-16  Jim Bartle: Rules question on stealing home, which I may have asked earlier:

In the famous Jackie Robinson steal of home, Berra comes up to the plate to catch the pitch and make the tag. But isn't it still a regular pitch? Couldn't Keller just have swung (softly), hit Berra, and gotten catcher interference called?

Do catchers have the right to step up and stop batters from swinging just because a runner is coming home?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XY...

May-02-16  Jim Bartle: 6.06 A batter is out for illegal action when-

(c) He interferes with the catcher's fielding or throwing by stepping out of the batter's box or making any other movement that hinders the catcher's play at home base.

7.09 It is interference by a batter or a runner when-

((d) Before two are out and a runner on third base, the batter hinders a fielder in making a play at home base; the runner is out;

I guess that means if there is going to be a play at the plate, the batter cannot swing/interfere.

WannaBe: <Jim Bartle> I don't think so... What happens if the runner heads home during the delivery of the pitch, and the batter hits the ball for a hit?

What're the opinion of fellow esteemed members here?

Also:

<Michael Rothstein
ESPN Staff Writer

The Lions have fired east coast scout Chad Henry and Midwest scout Darren Anderson, according to a league source.

Henry had been with the Lions since 1998 in personnel and scouting. Anderson had been with the Lions since 2012. Lions GM Bob Quinn said after the draft he was still evaluating his scouts.>

Is this like a firing of bench coach and third base coach to motivate the team?

OhioChessFan: A batter can swing at any pitch. A normal part of the game doesn't constitute "hindering".

Yes. By the way, Robinson was out.
