Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

WannaBe: Two Cy Young winners every year, the odds of throwing a no-no is about 1-500, hence, therefore, ergo, thus, we should expect Trump v Hillary in 2016.

Scientifically proven. Q.E.D.

Penguincw: More breaking news: Curry left the game due to an injury, all bandwagon Warriors fan switching teams 'til further notice. :p

But seriously, they should've rested Curry. Considering the Warriors only lost by <1> point on the road, without their star player, and amid some "controversies" shows that they could easily beat the Rockets, and I like the Rockets far more than the Warriors (doesn't necessarily mean I believe they'll win).

Glad my Raptors are still in the playoffs, healthy. But my favourite American NBA team are the Spurs, so they should have an easier road to the championship now.

In hockey news, Flyers out, Blues being forced to G7. :(

Phony Benoni: <Party Animal> Not a good week for Detroit. The Wings got thumped 4-1 by the Lightning, and are out of the playoffs. That's the good news.

The Tigers got swept by the Indians. The Pistons got swept by the Cavaliers.

It's bad enough to lose all your games. But to lose all you games to Cleveland....

Apr-25-16  Jim Bartle: <But seriously, they should've rested Curry.>

From what I saw, Curry's injury yesterday had nothing to do with his previous injury. He slipped on a wet spot and sprained his knee

Just saw that Curry is out for 2 weeks. Even though the injury is unrelated, I still think Curry should've rested for the rest of the series. The Warriors can easily steamroll Houston. Clippers/Blazers, maybe, Thunders/Spurs likely not.

Apr-26-16  Party Animal: Mr Benoni, here's the Kiper Draft page! It let's you zero in on the Draft in depth! ; P

Yo Phony, I really like that Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliott. A real Blue Chipper! a horse of a back at 5'11" & 225 lbs. The experts say he's the best back in 5 Drafts!! Could be the best RB since Adrian Peterson. I also am very high on DE Joey Bosa.

Good Luck pal come Thursday Night!

Apr-26-16  Jim Bartle: <Least Bobble head give-aways, San Diego Padres (0)>

Perhaps because the Padres have the most bobble-headed players.

Phony Benoni: <Party Animal> The Bears pick before the Lions. If EE is so good, why don't your guys take him?

Actually, outside of drafting a kicker nothing the Lions do will surprise me. I still think DB is their biggest weakness but they could use significant players anywhere without having a slam-dunk critical need. This could well be a Best Athlete Available situation.

Apr-26-16  Party Animal: <Phony Benoni: <Party Animal> The Bears pick before the Lions. If EE is so good, why don't your guys take him?> Phony, I hope the Bears do select Elliott if he's still there at 11. If not Joey Bosa would be great but he'll probably be gone too. Just have to wait & see.

Phony Benoni: Got a little curious tonight about the next crop of four decade players -- and, yes, for the sake of this, I'm going to consider 2020 to be a new decade.

Alex Rodriguez (began 1994) and David Ortiz (1997) are retiring, so they are out of the mix. Barolo Colon (1997) qualifies, but can he really stick around four more years?

More realistic candidates:

A J Pierzynski (1998)
Carlos Beltran (1996)
Adrian Beltre 1998)

Pierzynski seems to be slowing down a bit, but you can stick around a long time as a back-up catcher. Beltran is already 39. Beltre, who is still an effective every day player, might be the best bet of there.

I was looking at a list of players with the longest careers which didn't cover rookies from 1999. Here's a list of them. Anybody stick out?

http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...

Apr-26-16  Jim Bartle: Catchers don't usually last that long, have shorter careers. Beltre is close to retirement. His act with Andrus is fun, though. Beltran won't be playing at 43.

First one I remember was Willie McCovey, who came up at the perfect time, July 1959 at age 21, and retired midseason in 1980.

WannaBe: They can always do a Gordie Howe and play in the minors when they are 70s and claim they played in 6 decades.
