Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: Well, that must have been easy. He got four days of rest while his team was batting.

But something's wrong here. Cy Young winners are supposed to flame out.

Apr-21-16  Jim Bartle: The box scores are now including the number of pitches each batter has faced during the game? How about how many balls, how many strikes, how many foul balls?

Group analytics therapy after the game.

WannaBe: Holy Harry Carey, I just checked the prices for that game on StubHub, they are CHEAP!!!

You can make some serious money reselling.

Apr-22-16  Jim Bartle: OK, this is a great throw by Hicks to the plate. I read it was 105 mph. But look at the slide. Why does he slide past the plate and try to touch it with his hand? If he had gone straight to the bse with his feet he would have been safe.

With the new rule the catcher cannot block him off the plate, so he would have made it.

Apr-22-16  Jim Bartle: ESPN comes up with another pseudo-statistic: The only pitchers to win a Cy Young and pitch a no-hitter the next year are Koufax, Gibson, Kershaw, and now Arrieta. And only Kershaw won the Cy Young the next year as well.

I don't consider that all that revealing, and I don't like the inference Arrieta belongs in that company, at least not yet.

And the only reason Koufax didn't do it twice, and also repeat as Cy Young winner twice, is that there was only one Cy Young for the major leagues in his time.

Had there been a Cy Young for each league Koufax would have won the NL award in 1964 (19-5, 1.74), giving him four straight, and with no hitters in 64 and 65 after winning the Cy Young, and repeating the next year.

Apr-22-16  Jim Bartle: I took a look at the 1964 Cy Young vote.

Dean Chance went 20-9 with a 1.65 ERA for the Angels. Koufax went 19-5 with a 1.74 ERA for the Dodgers. Chance may have been slightly better, but enough that he got 17 votes and Koufax 1? Maybe it was because Koufax was injured and missed a few starts, but he still pitched more than 200 innings.(Park effects? Not a factor. They pitched in the same park.)

Larry Jackson of the Cubs got two votes, probably from writers who believed most wins is the key stat. Jackson went 24-11 with a 3.10 ERA.

Penguincw: Ellsbury with a straight steal of home! The last time he did it, it was <against> the Yankees (as a member of the Red Sox).
Apr-23-16  Jim Bartle: I watched that one against Andy Pettitte. Very dramatic.

What are the rules for the batter and catcher on a steal of home? I assume the batter can still swing or bunt. And the catcher has to make sure not to interfere with the batter?

If so, the batter should be ready to swing if the catcher steps up too soon.

Apr-23-16  Jim Bartle: On that triple play, it started with a line drive to relatively deep right. So why did Prince Fielder on third not tag up immediately, or at least as soon as he saw the throw coming back to first base? He would have scored easily.

Beltre broke for third when the throw came toward first, which was natural. But Fielder stayed put.

I don't fault the runner on first as much. He messed up by thinking the ball would not be caught, but he wasn't going to tag up anyway.

WannaBe: Things of 'interest' from last night's game.

Mattingly had Bond bring out the starting lineup, he received a nice round of applause and some standing Os.

When Ichiro came up to pinch-hit, he received a smattering of applause. Ugh!

Apr-23-16  Jim Bartle: People should appreciate Ichiro more. However he played his entire career before this year in the American League, so most Giants fans don't know him that well.

In any case, I would be more interested in seeing him play rightfield and uncork a great throw than watch him bat. What an arm.

Puig made a throw from the warning track to nail a runner at thrd by about six inches last night. The throw was on the fly and landed two feet right in front of the base.

When I first saw that comment on the chessforums page, I almost thought Toronto blew their 7-2 lead and trailed 10-7...

But anyway, Jays beat Oakland 9-3. Oakland with its first road loss. Every team now has at least one win and one loss at home and on the road.

Switching over to hockey, <Mating Net>'s Kings have been eliminated, as SJS avenges the loss 2 years ago. PHI fighting to stay alive, STL up 3-2, looking to advance.

Phony Benoni: Pirates also won 12-10. You don't often see two football games with that score on the same day, let alone baseball.

But, then, that's another silly statistics. You rarely see two prot football games with the same score on any day, regardless of what the score is.

Which reminds me, I never did weigh in on Cy Young pitchers throwing no-hitters the next year. Why did ESPN say <only> four, as if implying there should have been many more? Considering the relative infrequency of no-hitters and pitchers winning the Cy Young award, having it happen four times might well be an extraordinarily high number.
