Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

OhioChessFan: Update: <In a highly unusual move, Florida State, facing an out-classed opponent in Savannah State of the FCS, called the game in the third quarter with FSU winning, 55-0.

The teams elected to cut the halftime break to only 10 minutes and have the entire second half played with a running clock. Inclement weather conditions prompted the hurry-up approach, as a rain delay came in the third quarter. But it was an easy decision to call it quits considering the lopsided nature of the contest.>

Sep-09-12  talisman: football, rain, they keep playing. baseball, rain, they stop, golf thunder, everybody runs, ...the moral...the smaller the balls.....(fill in the blank).

Phony Benoni: <talisman> Doesn't hold. They don't even try to play basketball outside.
Sep-09-12  Jim Bartle: They even play football in the fog. Anybody remember that playoff game from the late 80s, Chicago-Philadelphia I think, where the cameras really couldn't even see the players and the players couldn't see more than 20 yards?

Phony Benoni: OK, without looking--which are larger, baseballs or tennis balls?
Sep-09-12  Jim Bartle: Baseballs.
Sep-09-12  talisman: <Phony> baseballs...we would always use tennis balls in the cages, so the baseball would look like a grapefruit(hopefully) during the game. :)

Phony Benoni: Yes, it the baseball, but I was surprised to find out there's not much of a differenece: baseballs have a diameter of about 2.875 in., while tennis balls are about 2.625 in.

Phony Benoni: By the way, <JB> I was sort of flipping around between football plays looking in on the women's final at the US Open. When Serena went down 5-3 in the third set I figured, "Well, that one's over."

I flipped back one last time to see her lying on the ground and thought "Hmm. Usually the winner does that!"

Sep-10-12  Jim Bartle: No, no matter how poorly she plays, Serena's never out of a match until it's over. In this case, Azarenka sort of gave it to her at the end, playing poorly from the time she started to serve at 5-4.

chancho: That was a great match.

Serena turns 31 years of age on the 26th.

How many slam titles do you guys think she has left in her?

Sep-10-12  Jim Bartle: Serena is in excellent shape and can go on for years. Remember that she doesn't play the tour week after week, just a few big tournaments, so she hasn't suffered the wear and tear of players who play full time.

WannaBe: <chancho> Great question, a lot of good/younger players coming up; non-US, mostly (Eastern) European tennis players are catching up to the calibre of play.

  WannaBe: Very interesting question: http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/8...

Reminds me a bit of the subplot in Men in Black III.

I would choose Juan Marichal and Johnny Roseboro game. Anyone else would like/care to chime in?

  OhioChessFan: 1. Lou Gehrig's speech.
2. Jackie Robinson's first game.
3. Game 6 1975 World Series
4. Don Larsen's perfect game
5. Any game in Yankee Stadium 1927
6. Any game Walter Johnson started
7. Any game Ty Cobb started a fight

I could go on a while, but I'll stop at lucky 7.

Phony Benoni: Game 7 of the 1960 World Series (Pirates - Yankees) is the first one that comes to my mind. Noses out Game 6 of 1975 (Reds vs. Red Sox) simply because it was game 7.
Sep-11-12  Jim Bartle: My immediate choice would be game 6 of the 1975 Series, not just because it was a great game but because it was at Fenway Park. But the Pittsburgh-Yankee game 7 would be up there as well, with the Bobby Thompson game of course.

But I think I'd most like to see one of the World Series games between Milwaukee and the Yankees from 1957 or 1958. Two great teams, from the time I first learned about major league baseball.

Phony Benoni: One of the problems with this game is that knowing something memorable is about to happen takes much of the fun out of it. <OCF> has a couple of other ideas that might be more interesting: simply seeing Walter Johnson pitch a game, Wee Willie Keeler hitting, Ty Cobb running the bases, John McGraw arguing with an umpire.

In this department, the top of my list might be seeing what really happened when Babe Ruth "called his shot".

playground player: <Wannabe> Almost as fun as the Marichal-Roseboro contretemps would be the immortal "Pine Tar Game" at Yankee Stadium. George Brett blasts Gossage for a game-winning home run (he always hit Gossage like he owned him), Billy Martin comes out and shows Brett's bat to the umpire... the home run is declared an out instead. Brett's head practically explodes, the whole place goes wild, and AL President Lee MacPhail mulls calling for a do-over.

keypusher: I'd pick something from 1908, partly just because I'd really like to watch a dead ball game from over 100 years ago, partly because there were so many amazing games that year.

Here's a candidate:

http://www.baseball-almanac.com/box...

Also the Merkel's boner game, or the playoff at the end of the year. Would love to see Rube Waddell pitch or Honus Wagner hit.

Sep-11-12  Travis Bickle: Hey Phony how ya feeling my best pal?!
I vote for definitely something from the 1908 season. The year The Cubs won The Series!! ; P

Phony Benoni: <keypusher> I'd be a little intimidated about that end of the season make-up game between the Cubs and Giants in 1908. I've read accounts, and it was not an atmosphere for the faint of heart.

And just imagine what would happen when <Travis> shows up at the Polo Grounds wearing his Bears' Head!

keypusher: *Merkle. The German chancellor's next boner will be her first.
Sep-11-12  Jim Bartle: And nobody gets to second base with her.
