 | | Penguincw: Well <WannaBe> said that he didn't think Judge's strikeout streak would last as long as Joe's hitting streak. Well, he's right. Strikeout streak snapped at 37 games. And he actually had 3 un intentional walks today (not like he swung at the first pitch each time to try to snap the streak). And the Yankees won too, but by a blowout. |

Aug-23-17
 | | Penguincw: Correction to that Judge streak. Giradi did take him out, and his replacement Ellsbury had 2 AB, so who knows. Maybe if it were a close game, Judge could've continued his streak. But hey, he struck out today. Time to start up a brand new streak? |
|
Aug-23-17
 | | saffuna: Hill no hits through 9, one on via error in the ninth. But still 0-0. Almost reached Harvey Haddix territory. |
|
Aug-23-17
 | | Penguincw: <WannaBe>, I know you were watching that LAD-PIT game. You just didn't want to jinx your own team. But well, not only did they give up the no-hitter, but got the loss too! And since it came on a homer, Hill doesn't have to ech his name as a pitcher who threw a no-hitter in a losing effort. ---
Anyone still remember last year when Hill got pulled after throwing 7 perfect innings? Of course, last year was different, since the Dodgers were actually still contending for the postseason, and were pretty short on starters. The game was not a no-hitter, but Rich did retire 26 in a row (across 3 games). |

 | | WannaBe: Completely missed it, until I saw the 1H 1HR line, for R. Hill. Tough loss. |

 | | WannaBe: I am very much ashamed for missing that gem. Was talking and having brewskis with friends who are going to Reno for the upcoming fight... I wish I was following the baseball game, instead... |
|
Aug-23-17
 | | saffuna: Brilliant catch by Utley in the 8th to keep it perfect. And on the home run Granderson made a great effort to catch the ball over the wall. Those are good signs. A single loss means nothing to do the Dodgers these days. Three in a row wouldn't mean much. |
|
Aug-24-17
 | | Penguincw: Jays blew a 5-0 lead, but still win 7-6. First 10 runs in the game came via. the long ball. That article listed above is pretty much what everyone thinks, of why home runs are so common this year. I also think it's because players are more likely to swing for the fences. It can be hard to get hits with all these shifts... ---
Surprised you missed it <WannaBe>. But it was a great game. Every no-hitter or perfect game though, a player usually <does> get a hit (they just get robbed by spectacular defense). But yeah, when you're 20 games up in your division and have a deep rotation, they don't have to worry about wins, or possible injuries. Speaking of no-hitters, I see NC (of the LLWS), gave up their first hit today. But still, it's now just 1 hit given up over 18 innings... |
|
Aug-24-17
 | | saffuna: I have read that many players have changed from the classic level swing to an uppercut. That means more home runs and more strikeouts. |
|

But once again, why isn't the rightfielder over there to back up? If he'd hustled this would have been a double. |

 | | Phony Benoni: The Tiers are utterly frustrated. They haven't hit consistently all year, and now the starting pitching -- which had been the only thing keeping them above water -- is also falling apart. Except for Verlander, whom everybody still expects to be traded. This won't snap them out of it. Instead, it may be the beginning of a total tank. The effort has been there, just not the results, and they may simply not have the will to care any more. It that happens ausmus is gone, and GM Al Avila ought to be as well. Cabrera might as well get suspended for the rest of the year. He hasn't been right since being injured in the World Baseball Classic, and now it's obviously affecting him mentally as well. I guess playing the last month won't make that much difference, but he needs time to straighten himself out. If he can. It gets harder in your mid-30s when you've never faced this kind of adversity. |

 | | saffuna: <The Tiers are utterly frustrated.> So are the Iants. |

Aug-25-17 | | technical draw: It looks like this year we're going to have another Mr. November. This season seems as slow as molasses in January. |

 | | perfidious: <PB>, would it be reasonable to refer to, eg, the 1939 ACF Congress as the 40th US Open in the game headers or not? |
|
Aug-27-17
 | | Phony Benoni: <perfidious> That's not just reasonable -- it's been on my To-Do List since Game Editors were allowed to change tournament names. One thing holding me back is the problem of what call the pre-1940 events in the series. <US Open> would be anachronistic -- most were neither open nor national in score. Right now we use "Western Championship", but more accurate would be "Western Chess Association Tournament." I need to clear this up in my own mind before changing everything. |

 | | saffuna: <pb> You've commented that you don't see anything new in baseball very often. Here are a couple new ones from yesterday:
Andrelton Simmons falls down as he hits a homer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZF... 7-4-3 triple play: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HmZ... |

Aug-27-17
 | | Penguincw: Cubs' offense crushed the Phillies yesterday. You know it's bad when the Cubs' <starter> (Hendricks) had 2 hits, in <one inning>. And Hendricks isn't too good of a hitter (even for a pitcher). ---
Meanwhile, Stanton just hit his 50th HR of the season today. Excluding Bonds, McGuire and Sosa, only Maris has done it earlier than Aug/27 (at Aug/22). Maris of course, also holds the record at 61, if you exclude those 3 men. The record for a player on an NL team looks to be Howard (PHI) in 2007 (58 long balls). |
|
Aug-27-17
 | | saffuna: I'm subscribed to MLB's "At Bat" program. It has lots of highlights from the day's games, in HD. But they've been getting lazy the past few days, just posting a Stanton home run each day. You'd think they could find a little variety. |
