 | | WannaBe: Judge NYY, have just set a new record for a position player, most consecutive games with a strike out. (Yesterday) http://bleacherreport.com/articles/... He is now tied with B. Stoneman, who was a pitcher for all-time record (35 games) Saturday, it will CC Sabathia vs. C. Sale. I see a new record in young Mr. Judge's future. Young Mr. Judge may catch Joe DiMaggio... But not for consecutive hits. =)) |

 | | saffuna: Sure, a lot of times you can do more hitting into an out than striking out, but overall it's just another out. And if you strike out you never ground into a double play. |

 | | Penguincw: Welp, I guess this is becoming more common in the league nowadays. Homer, or strike out. Although I can't blame them, as these shifts are making it hard to get hits... I'm a bit surprised that it's a pitcher that holds the record. But I'm sure all it takes, is 1 game where a starter has to sac bunt, and then gets taken out before the next plate appearance, or some 4 ft ground ball to snap the streak. At the major leagues, well, of course putting the ball in play is better than striking out (you never know), but like mentioned, if it means possibly a GIDP, I'm sure you'd rather take a strikeout. But at a lower level (say Little League, which is going on right now), where fielders are weaker and the strike zones are larger (and bases can be smaller too), any close pitch will be swung at. |

 | | Penguincw: AL WC race looking interesting. TOR entered play 3 games below 500, but just 3 games out of the 2nd wild card spot. However, they got 6 teams to leapfrog (but plenty of baseball left, and including many games vs. those teams). A loss today didn't help, but it was an interesting game, as Montero faced the Cubs for the first time since he, left, the team. He was dismissed after some comments he made, since he and Arrieta couldn't throw any baserunners out. Arrieta is slow to the plate, but Montero doesn't have a great arm either. Just check out this video on those 2 giving up runners: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9nh.... Rizzo wasn't too happy of those comments, and just to prove his point, he stole off Montero today. Arrieta did start the game for the Cubs. If Montero thinks it's hard to throw runners out with Arrieta, imagine what Ross thought of Lester... |

 | | Penguincw: Check out the LAA-BAL game last night. The 2 teams hit a combined <10> home runs. <All> of the runs, for both teams, came via. the long ball (16 in total, beating the 11 from the LAD-NYM game a few weeks ago). Angels also blew a 5-0 lead, and got walk offed via. the grand slam (just like a few weeks ago in Toronto). |

 | | saffuna: <But at a lower level (say Little League, which is going on right now), where fielders are weaker and the strike zones are larger (and bases can be smaller too), any close pitch will be swung at.> Any close pitch will also be called a strike. Otherwise the LLWS would be a parade of walks. |

 | | WannaBe: <Penguincw> Nice find! I did <NOT> realize the game last night was all HRs. So. Un-officially, that LAA-BAL game holds the record for most runs in a game that the runs all came via HR. =) |
|
Aug-19-17
 | | WannaBe: That 'record' raised a question in my mind, how do you device an algorithm that will verify it? 1. Find all games total runs equals or are more than LAA/BAL game. 2. Determine, by looking at the box score, some of which older one have no description, ascertain all runs were scored via HRs? Another way of asking, if you have:
Phony Benony 4AB 2H 2RBI 1BB 0K 1HR
How do you know if it is a Solo, or 2RBI HR? |
|
Aug-19-17
 | | WannaBe: Judge have broken the record for most consecutive games with a strike out. http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/... By position player or pitcher. Definitely not Joe DiMaggio's record. |

 | | WannaBe: Great pitching duel in Detroit, LAD just got their first hit. In the 6th. |
|
Aug-20-17
 | | saffuna: I swear "Dodgers vs. Detroit" still doesn't sound right to me. I just can't get used to interleague play. |
|
Aug-20-17
 | | WannaBe: DET promptly scores 2 with 3 hits in the bottom of 6th.. |
|
Aug-20-17
 | | WannaBe: 6-1 top 9, don't see a (miracle) come-back by LAD this time... |
|
Aug-20-17
 | | saffuna: My God! The Dodgers lost. What next, the sun going dark at midday? |
|
Aug-20-17
 | | saffuna: Dodgers went 16-4 against the American League this year. |
|
Aug-20-17
 | | Penguincw: Dodgers recently picked up Granderson as well. Man, this team is looking very deep, almost too deep. Of course, LAD is very well prepared in case some (or many) players get injured, but I wonder how Roberts et al. will decide who gets to make the postseason roster and all. Also remember, the postseason is only 5-7 games, so not much room for error. I do hope they are able to win it all. |

 | | WannaBe: Judge whiff'd again, 0 for 4 with 1K... |
|
Aug-20-17
 | | WannaBe: Wondering if beers are sold at Little League Classics between Cards and Bucs... |
|
Aug-20-17
 | | Penguincw: Speaking of LLWS, not quite LL, but did you see this catch by the center fielder? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6N...
Meanwhile, in the LLWS, North Carolina, managed to throw back-to-back no hitters (2nd one just 4 innings due to mercy rule). Must have to do with their left handed catcher. Left handed catcher... :') Canada also 2-0. :O
And one last thing, learned of this during the ESPN broadcast. Have you ever heard of the Hidden Potato Trick? http://articles.latimes.com/2012/fe... |
|
Aug-20-17
 | | saffuna: Yes, I saw that! As the announcer said, would have been a great catch at any level. As good as that catch by Bradley in centerfield at Fenway a couple of weeks ago. |
|
Aug-20-17
 | | WannaBe: Hidden Potatoe trick? Yep, try (looking up) the Skunk in the outfield trick, also on ESPN... Next year, my little league team gonna try the French Fry Trick. You buy the other team Fries. Bribery!! |

 | | Penguincw: The 2 worst teams in the NL, SF and PHI were facing each other today (or rather yesterday, as in Sunday). SF needed a win to still remain mathematically alive in the division. They lost. Yes, it does seem early to be talking about elimination numbers, but remember that LAD could win 117 games this year, and SF is just having a really bad season (probably because it's an odd year). Idk why, but I feel like making my predictions for the postseason now (teams listed first have home field advantage, while teams in <gold brackets> win the series): ALWCG: <NYY> - LAA ALDS: <HOU> - NYY, BOS - <CLE> ALCS: <HOU> - CLE NLWCG: <ARI> - COL NLDS: <LAD> - ARI, <WSH> - CHC NLCS: <LAD> - WSH WS: LAD - <HOU> Yes, you heard it here first. 3 streaks will be broken: a DC based, MLB team will win a postseason series (first since 1924), LAD wins a pennant (first since 1988) and HOU wins a WS (first in franchise history, since formed in 1962), but for WSH and LAD, they'll have to wait at least 1 more season to snap their other streaks. |
|
Aug-21-17
 | | WannaBe: LAD's off today, traveling from Detroit to Pittsburgh. Wonder if they are busing (approx. 5 hrs) it or flying (1 hr 10 min). =)) In other gnus, B. Colon became the third pitcher to have defeated all MLB teams http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/... The other two are M. Scherzer and J. Lackey.
Now, that is rather interesting... Because 2 great pitchers immediately come to mind, Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling. Did not beat every team. |
|
Aug-21-17
 | | Penguincw: 3rd <active> pitcher to do so, of course. He hasn't won at Wrigley or Chase Field yet, although it'll be tricky, being in the AL. ---
<WannaBe>, you were talking recently about how MLB pros don't shake hands or whatever. Did you see what happened at yesterday's LL game between STL and PIT? :O ---
Another thing I found out recently that was interesting. Remember when Harper and Trout came up to the big leagues, and there was a lot of hype regarding them, and comparison too. Well, Trout hit his 150th career home run at 24 y, 295 d. Harper hit his 150th career homer at, 24 y, 295 d. :O |
|
Aug-21-17
 | | WannaBe: <Penguincw> I saw the word <Active> and promptly went over it. Ugh! Here's the list: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major... |
