Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Penguincw: At least Gio still got the win. A few weeks ago, leading 1-0, Scherzer after pitching 7.1 IP of no-hit ball, gave up a hit, then an error, then a hit by pitch, wild pitch, and then another hit. He took the loss in a 2-1 defeat to MIA.

But nice tribute by Gonzalez to his late friend, Jose Fernandez on his birthday (Gonzalez grew up in the area).

takchess: Boston really misses Ortiz without anyone stepping up to fill the void. Our sports radio is in a big brouhaha about David Price being a jerk to Dennis Eckersley (announcer ) on a flight. Of course a winning streak would fix that but it is viewed that Boston did poorly at the trading deadline.

Penguincw: Speaking of that ARI-CHC game, CHC won 16-4, Montgomery with the save. He entered the game up 8-3, pitched 3 innings, that's a save.

WannaBe: Lookin' at the box score of OAK@SFG last night.

http://www.espn.com/mlb/boxscore?ga...

Lead off hitters that don't take (a lot of) pitches. Drives me nuts.

Raja Davis, 5AB 0H 0BB 1K. How many pitches he saw? 14, <14>!! That 1K is 3 pitches (at least), which mean his 4 other AB he saw a total of 11 pitches.

Denard Span, 4AB 1H 0BB 0K, 10 pitches. Ugh!

Oh, also, I just realized OAK have a pitcher named Dull. Hopefully it's never a Dull moment when he's on the mound.

perfidious: <WannaBe....Again, 5 NL and 5 AL in both top 10 and bottom 10, but with DH, does not one think that AL would generate more runs?>

Overall the AL should, but the list points up one weak offensive team: White Sox play in a park which favours the hitter, yet do not score many runs.

No surprise at all to see all those West Coast teams in the bottom eight in runs scored: the western parks help pitchers, which makes Dodgers' numbers in RS an anomaly for them.

Penguincw: On Saturday the Jays started Chris Rowley, a guy who once served in the military. He got the win.

This reminds me of Steve Delabar. Many years ago, he was a supply teacher, but the Jays got him, and turned him into a relief pitcher (even an All Star).

Ah, the Jays, taking guys with non-baseball jobs, and using them as baseball players.

Penguincw: Red Sox rally to beat the Yankees, 3-2 in 10 innings. Sunday night game, lasted 3:40 (not too bad).

I'm not the only one who noticed this, but Judge is really struggling since the All-Star break. I'm not too surprised however, as I've seen a lot of guys with good first halves, and then just fade away in the second half (Home Run Derby can be to blamed).

Though I don't think the fact that Judge has struck out in all 28 of his games since the ASG is very appealing...

I see the Yankees put their DH onto the field, but no pitcher had to bat.

Well, outfielders keep jumping over the fences and stealing his home runs.

WannaBe: Ya know, I've watched a lot of play-off hockey, and I mean <A LOT>. Whether it's first round, or the Stanley Cup Finals game 7, once a team is eliminated, the losing team will stay on the bench and then form line to shake hands with the winning team.

The worst, of course, have to be the Cup Final, winning team throws off their gloves, drops their stick, people on the bench are jumping onto the ice to mob each other, while the losing team just stares at the celebration.

Baseball is different...
