Mar-25-09 | | WhiteRook48: I own a copy of his book of "Winning Chess Openings."
Something like that. |
|
Apr-02-09 | | zooter: I open a copy of "Winning Chess Tactics" (read it fully), "Winning Chess Strategies" (read it halfway didn't have patience to complete it), "Winning Chess Endings" (recent purchase not yet read), "Winning Chess Brilliancies" (no time to read yet) and thinking of buy "Winning Chess OPenings" This guy is a fantastic writer and a good player too! |
|
Apr-02-09 | | chessman95: <thinking of buy "Winning Chess OPenings"> I have that book, and it's good for the variations it covers. Watch out though: he only covers the main main main lines (like he only covers Bg5 in the Najdorf) and does a lot of "I encourage further studying" throughout the book. Once you actually do do further studying, this book is rendered useless. He also does a lot of saying what theorists currently think of the line, and not WHY. The only other problem I had with the book is that it has a chapter for the Open Games, Semi-Open, Closed, Indian, etc. But then at the end of the book that last few chapters are devoted entirely to the KID, Pirc, and Barcza system. It would help if he had that amount of theory on the openings more likely to arise. I'm not saying the book isn't worth buying though. It's entertaining, and provides a good introduction to the basics of chess opening theory, although you'll absolutely be spending many more hours in the library after reading it. |

 | | HeMateMe: Bobby Fischer had high praise for Seriwan's book "Five Crowns", a book that covers (i think) the 5th and final KK match, half in France, and half in ______? It really is a good book, the comments are insightful, but on more of a strategic nature, the pages aren't loaded with a bunch of 15 move variations, so you arn't put off by the book's depth. All the more interesting, because I don't think I've ever heard of Fischer complementing a chess book or author. He owned many chess books, but never seemed to talk about them. I think I saw one interview where BF mentions he had one of the real basic intro books, like Capa's "Chess Fundamentals" as a kid, or something like that. Does anyone know anything about Fishcer's collection of chess books, what he liked, and what may have happened to these books, as his estate was settled? |

He's no longer walking. |

 | | James Demery: He was also the most hate filled Anti Semite celebrity walking the earth ... when he walked the earth ... which he no longer does as Speculator pointed out. What was Fischer supposed to have been misquoted about? Did someone accuse him of liking Jews and the United States? |
|
May-11-09 | | MaxxLange: <HeHateMe> In Inside Chess, Seirawan's old magazine, there was once an article by a guy who met Fischer in a chess bookstore in Argentina, and had several long conversations with him. He quoted Fischer's remarks about some books in that piece - I'll see if I can find it tonight. |

 | | IMlday: "Bobby is the most misunderstood, misquoted celebrity walking the face of this earth." --Yasser Seirawan (1992) p. 291 "No Regrets"
An example of myth-making:
"He praised 9/11 because of the number of Jews who were killed in the World Trade Center."
--Paul Hoffman, (2007) p.13 "King's Gambit"
Reality check:
"Bobby was in Japan, which is 14 hours ahead of New York...it was almost impossible for Bobby to have known the extent of damage or loss of life at the time he made the broadcast...If you listen to the exact words Bobby used, you will find that he never mentions the attack on the World Trade Center. Nowhere in the interview does he say the words "World Trade Center". If you listen carefully, you will also see that the interviewer does not say that the World Trade Center has been attacked. Rather, the interviewer refers to "the attack on the White House and I think the Pentagon too"."
--Sam Sloan (2002ish) "Bobby Fischer's Statements have been Misrepresented"
http://www.anusha.com/bobbyout.htm
"I hope this essay isn't just a breeze against a hurricane" Seirawan, (1992) ibid p.307 |

The interviewer mentioned the world trade center at the start of the interview. Sloan is just lying as a quick glance at this transcipt will show. http://iraqwar.mirror-world.ru/arti...
It had been all over the world news for several hours so of course he knew, he just didn't care. |

Aug-21-09 | | Everett: Our love of our heroes dies hard, I guess. I remember really liking Rickey Henderson and Charles Barkley for their originality and flair, until I realized later that they were jerks. |
|
Aug-21-09 | | MaxxLange: <slightly outdated> Last I heard, he lives in Switzerland with his wife now, and is retired from serious chess...he plays every now and again, but he isn't trying to really win any titles like he used to |
|
Aug-22-09 | | Everett: Netherlands, unless he moved since '07 |
|
Aug-22-09 | | MaxxLange: <Everett> thanks - my mistake. He has been based in Amsterdam or another major Dutch city for some years now |
|
Aug-22-09 | | Everett: Glad to be of help.
I'm a big fan of Yasser for many reasons, but foremost is his personality. He seems to only want the best for chess and chess players. Also he was pretty good, but not good enough to compete consistently with the younger generation starting with Anand, Ivanchuk, etc. Sad but true. |

 | | HeMateMe: I thought Yaz has done a fine job of representing American chess, both as a player and as a commentator/author. Not blessed with Fischer's talent, he has something Fischer didn't--an ability to communicate with different kinds of people and both inform others and put them at ease. I read in an intro to a rook/pawn endgame book that he is a big boxing fan, that he and some other GM on the west coast used to sit around for hours, watching boxing on TV or YouTube, and discussing the pugilists. He is in Holland now, hope he isn't spending too much time in those marijuana bars... |
|
Aug-28-09 | | Everett: <HeMateMe> That was a nice thing to say, that first paragraph. |

Aug-28-09
 | | HeMateMe: Well, its always nice to see people in this business that are well-adjusted and not crazy... I particulary liked some of the asides in his book about the '92 Fischer Spassky rematch 'No Regrets.' Fish still wasn't speaking to Yaz, years after Yaz had called him 'the ghost of Pasadena', in a book or magazine article. They met up in this Yugo resort town where the match was being held, Yaz sort of apologized and Fischer said "Lets just forget the whole thing." A few days later, they were both at the beach, on a rest day, and Fish walked over and invited Yaz to dinner. They spent the evening analyzing the part of the match that had been played, and yaz was able to remember the home analysis comments, and relay the moves in his book. Fish has a live in girlfriend at this point, a girl from the Balkans, I think. Kind of interesting stuff if you have closely followed RJF's career. I think too, it was mentioned that as the chess software got more powerful, and of more use to professionals, BF asked yaz to try and get him a software/hardware set up with the latest chess stuff. This was well before the match; Fish was still below the radar at this point, Yaz just did it out of kindness, got him a chess computer set up. |
