Aug-27-20  wordfunph: rest in peace, GM Wolfgang Uhlmann..
Aug-28-20  norami: With Uhlmann’s passing there are now only ten living players who have defeated Fischer in tournament games, and only six after he started playing internationally in 1958.

Benzol: Ivkov and Spassky are the only two that immediately come to mind. Who are the others?
Aug-28-20  Retireborn: Kovacevic, Gheorghiu, Olfasson? (not sure if they are still alive)

perfidious: <Retireborn>, all are still with us.
Aug-28-20  vonKrolock: Dieter Keller ?!
Aug-28-20
Premium Chessgames Member
  perfidious: Keller is the other.
Aug-29-20  Scuvy: I'll take a shot at the other four players: Milton Otteson, Ken Warner, James Sherwin and Viktors Pupols.
Aug-29-20  norami: You all got it right. Those are the ten.
Aug-29-20  norami: While we’re at it, name the four living players who have defeated Botvinnik in official tournament games.

Benzol: Lothar Schimd, Andreas Dueckstein and Roman Dzindzichashvilli

Does a victory in a clock simil count?
If so you could add Stuart Conquest.

Aug-29-20  areknames: RIP GM Uhlmann. If he was living in Dresden during the war he obviously survived the total destruction of his city to become the (probably) strongest German player of his time and one of the leading experts on the French. Not many left now of this generation...
Aug-29-20  whiteshark: Another Titan of the French Defense has left us.

The idea that you might continue to analyze in another place is perhaps a little comforting.

Farewell and rest in peace, Wolfgang Uhlmann

Aug-29-20  norami: <Benzol> Averbakh rather than Schmid.

perfidious: <norami>, I beg to differ: Schmid beat Botvinnik with Black in his speciality, the Benoni sideline which bears his name, at the Euroteams in 1965.

Schmid beat Botvinnik, but he passed away in 2013.

Aug-30-20  paavoh: A dedicated player of the French defense, very sad news about him passing - RIP.

Since high school, I have been looking at his (and Korchnoi's) games for inspiration.

Feb-14-21  Everett: < norami: With Uhlmann’s passing there are now only ten living players who have defeated Fischer in tournament games, and only six after he started playing internationally in 1958.>

A reminder of why one should not choose me to be on a trivial pursuit team.

Bronstein’s ideas on both sides of the French are tremendous. Perhaps surprisingly, Portisch too. Recommended
