SIMEN AGDESTEIN
(born May-15-1967, 58 years old) Norway

[what is this?]

Simen Agdestein was awarded the IM title in 1983 and the GM title in 1985. He has won a record nine Norwegian chess championships, including the 2022 and 2023 championships. He holds records for being both the youngest (age 15, in 1982) and oldest (age 56, in 2023) champion. He was one of the nominees to the World Cup (2013), but was eliminated from the Cup when he lost to Etienne Bacrot in the first round.

Agdestein is also the former coach of Magnus Carlsen, and is the brother of Carlsen's present manager, Espen Agdestein. He has authored and co-authored several books on chess, including a biography of Carlsen.

Multitalented, he also represented Norway football (soccer, to Americans) at the international level.

Jul-15-05  Montreal1666: I said this on the Magnus page too. Agdestein should not participate in a tournament where he and Magnus are the two strongest players. Now he is supposed to play a match against his 15 year old pupil!. This is just weird.
Oct-31-05  MoonlitKnight: Agdestein just won the Arco Open in Italy with 8/9 and a performance of 2714. Seems like both players are in great form before the Norwegian title match Agdestein - Carlsen.
Oct-31-05  iron maiden: Has the Adgestein-Carlsen match been scheduled yet? It would probably have to be sometime in November.
Oct-31-05  Udit Narayan: <iron maiden> I found a game that you could add to your zugzwang collection. Anand vs Topalov, 2005
Nov-01-05  iron maiden: <Udit Narayan> Since zugzwang is fairly common in the endgame, I try to avoid putting endgame positions in the collection, unless there's something particularly unique about them. Thanks anyway, though.
Nov-02-05  MoonlitKnight: <iron maiden> The match is scheduled for 7th - 8th of November (with eventual tie breaks on the 9th).
Nov-02-05  MoonlitKnight: <iron maiden> The match is scheduled for 7th - 8th of November (with eventual tie breaks on the 9th).
Nov-02-05  iron maiden: <MoonlitKnight> Thanks. These are probably the most important games of the year for Carlsen, so I'm sure he'll prepare hard. I'm predicting a 1-1 draw with Magnus winning the tiebreaks.
Nov-11-05  lopium: He was born the same day as me!!! ahahahzzz!!! Incredible!! Well, not that much, a chance on 366 I think.
Nov-12-05  Daodejing: Simen Agdestein beats Magnus Carlsen in a Playoff for the Norwegian Championship

Magnus Carlsen and Simen Agdestein played off for the Norwegian Championship title (they tied in the original event in Sandnes, Norway July 2nd-9th 2005) November 7th-10th 2005 in Oslo. They played two games with a full 7 hour time control, followed by tie break games on the 9th and 10th. Agdestein finally became champion winning the 6th playoff game after holding Carlsen with black in game 5.

Dec-14-05  MoonlitKnight: Magnus Carlsen's success in the World Cup has made Agdestein dancing with joy. Just look here: http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail...
Jan-10-06  Laskerfan82: The only other chess master I know of who played a sport at the very top level was George Alan Thomas, who was seven-time All-England Badminton champion, and even reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon. Were there others?
Jan-10-06  percyblakeney: <Laskerfan82> Torkil Nielsen was the Chess Champion of the Faroe Islands and scored the winning goal for the national football team against Austria in a qualification match for the European Championship. Here Tim Krabbé writes about the subject and mentions some other names as well:

http://www.xs4all.nl/~timkr/chess2/...

Jan-10-06  percyblakeney: ...none of them even remotely comparable to Agdestein, though, and Nielsen was "only" 2128 on the last FIDE list.

Jul-09-06  pinto123: Agdestein is my pick for the Norwegian Championship. Football is the flavor of the season! LOL!!
Jul-16-06  pinto123: You beat him last year, you can do it again. Good luck for the playoff, Simen!
Jul-27-06  aragorn69: <chessgames.com> One of Agdestein's most spectacular wins (and one of his favorite combinations according to http://www.xs4all.nl/~timkr/chess2/... ) is not in this database. I have no idea how to upload it. Maybe you could do us the favor...?

Here is the score:
Agdestein - Dolmatov, Tilburg 1993
1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.e4 d6 5.Bd3 0-0 6.Nge2 Nc6 7.0-0 Nd7 8.Be3 e5 9.d5 Nd4 10.Rc1 c5 11.dxc6 bxc6 12.b4 f5 13.exf5 gxf5 14.Bxd4 exd4 15.Na4 Qg5 16.f4 Qg6 17.c5 Kh8 18.Ng3 Nf6 19.Qf3 d5 20.Rfe1 Bd7 21.Re7 Rae8 22.Rce1 h5 23.Rxe8 Rxe8 24.Rxe8+ Qxe8 25.Qe2 Qb8 26.Nxh5 Qxb4 27.Nxg7 Kxg7 28.Qe7+ Kg6 29.h4 Qxa4 30.Be2 Qa3 31.h5+ Kh6 32.Qxf6+ Kh7 33.Qe7+ Kh6 34.Qd6+ and Black resigned

Jul-27-06  aragorn69: In the above game, I find 30.Be2! particularly pretty.

One great variation is: 30.-Ng4 31.h5+ Kh6 32.Qf7 (32.Qg5+ Kh7 33.Qg6+, though less spectacular, wins also) Be8! (only move) 33.Qf8+! Kh7 (33.-Kxh5 34.Qf6!! and mate in two) 34.Qxf5+ Kg7 (34.-Kh6 35.Qf8+ followed by Bd3+ mates) 35.Qxg4+ with an easy win.

Oct-20-06  positionalbrilliancy: "Remember Simen Agdestein? Seven times Norwegian national chess champion? Trainer of Magnus Carlsen? Ballroom dancer? In a former life Simen was a national soccer player. Now the chess grandmaster is returning to the football pitch, as part of a team of super nerds. Here is some remarkable video footage." http://chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp...
Oct-20-06  cuendillar: It's more than a little ironical that him, of all chess proffesionals, got handpicked when they were looking for a bunch of complete beginners...
Oct-20-06  mack: Yes, I rather think chessbase.com's assumption that the producers didn't know Simen was a footballer is a bit mad.

I'm doing a lot of research into the links between chess and football. It's quite well known Ossie Ardilles plays (Ray Keene has mentioned he played a Nimzo-Indian against him once); Andrei Kanchelskis (formerly of Man Utd, Rangers and Everton) is a very decent player, though being Russian he probably had it pounded into him from a very young age; Eric Cantona has mentioned chess more than a few times, and once compared Platini to Kasparov; Rafael Benitez (Liverpool manager) is very strong, according to his biographer; Zlatko Zahovic (who missed in the 2001 Champions League penalty shootout) plays; as does Czech Republic manager, Karel Bruckner. Any more for any more?

Oct-20-06  jamesmaskell: A British Prime Minister was an avid chessplayer (it says on the Downing street website). Chess also featured in the System of a Down video "Lonely Day".
Oct-20-06  cicero1974: <A British Prime Minister was an avid chessplayer> James Callaghan, I think.
Oct-20-06  percyblakeney: <chess and football>

GM Lars Bo Hansen and IM Bela Soos supposedly played football for their respective countries at some level. Torkil Nielsen was not only the chess champion of the Faroe Islands, but also scored the winning goal when they won against Austria in 1990.
