Jun-16-12  jon01: McShane has now beaten Carlsen, Aronian and Kramnik - when they were all rated over 2800.

Eggman: Quit your day job, Luke!
Jun-17-12  Paint My Dragon: Well done Lukey. Terrific results for an amateur! It must really p*ss them off that you don't really need the invites, the rating points, or the prize money. Just knocking them down for the fun of playing the game.

And all blistering middlegame attacks ... oh, right, you haven't had time to read that "Teach Yourself Endgames" book yet! Shh-h-h-h-h-h ... they'll probably never find out!

Jun-18-12  Arcturar: A huge congrats to Luke Mcshane for his performance in the Tal Memorial! Magnus should also be very, very thankful. :P

Aug-17-12  L13: McShane confirmed for LCC 2012. Good luck!
Sep-04-12  visayanbraindoctor: Why isn't McShane playing for the English team in the Olympiad?
Sep-04-12  SimonWebbsTiger: @<visayan>

I guess work. Luke had to withdraw from Wijk aan Zee because time made a choice between London and Wijk. He is an amateur, after all!

Sep-04-12  wordfunph: <SimonWebbs>

probably the best amateur player in modern times.

Sep-05-12  SimonWebbsTiger: amen to that, <wordfunph>!

Before him, Agdestein and then (I suppose) Reshevsky and Euwe.

Oct-28-12  hellopolgar: why do people keep saying that McShane is amateur?

read up the actual definition of amateur please.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amateur

i think what people actually mean is "not completely focused on chess". well, this holds true for many GM's. I wouldn't be surprised if Nakamura spent more time on poker than McShane on his trading job.

Oct-28-12  L13: Alternatively, we can look it up in an actual dictionary...

<am·a·teur (m-tûr, -tr, -chr, -chr, -tyr) n.

<1. A person who engages in an art, science, study, or athletic activity as a pastime rather than as a profession.>

2. Sports: An athlete who has never accepted money, or who accepts money under restrictions specified by a regulatory body, for participating in a competition.

3. One lacking the skill of a professional, as in an art.>

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/am...

It does grate a little when people keep referring to McShane as an amateur because it feels patronising, especially when used by Russian fans (on the chesspro.ru forum, for example), but given that he has a day job, it's not technically wrong.

Also, I don't think you understand what traders actually do. High-pressure jobs in finance are among the most time-consuming in the world. Frankly, I'm surprised he gets to participate in chess tournaments at all.

perfidious: Pity that references to McShane as an amateur frequently imply distaste for the concept, as though amateur were in some way less than a full-time professional.

For those who wish to denigrate someone in this way, I would be most happy to introduce them to an amateur poker player I have faced a number of times, Jay Heimowitz. Jay is a gentleman and one of the nicest people I have met in my poker career, but he is a hell of a tough customer. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jay_He...

Dionysius1: Maybe McShane's success will revive the term "amateur" as a compliment. As in "he doesn't do it for a living, and he can still beat most of the world's best players. Extra power to his elbow"
Nov-01-12  jahhaj: McShane now the British #1. http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail... . It's been on the cards for a while.
Jan-07-13  waustad: Happy birthday on what may be considered your first annual 29th!
Mar-14-13  L13: I noticed that McShane was back on 2700chess's list of 2700-rated players prior to the release of FIDE's March ranking, but his official rating of 269x didn't change on March 1. Anyone know why that might be?

Do rating changes/rated games sometimes take longer than a month to process? Or is the switch to monthly rating updates too recent for us to draw any conclusions yet?

Mar-27-13  Osbourne Cox: I read here that McShane is a trader. Does anybody know what kind of goods he trades ? Is he one of the persons that trade food for speculative reasons, without thinking about the consequences ???
Mar-27-13  pawn to QB4: <Does anybody know what kind of goods he trades ?> I gather he's one of a gang calling themselves Goldman Sachs. Did well betting on the collapse in subprime mortgage bonds.
Mar-27-13  Jim Bartle: Goldman Sachs was big on subprime mortgage bonds but reversed itself shortly before the collapse, avoiding a total disaster.

They also insured their mortgage investments with AIG, so AIG owed GS $13 billion to cover losses. The US govt. ended up paying this money to GS via AiG.

May-18-13  Intrepid Spiff: Luke, I am your father.
Jul-08-13  Everett: <Jim Bartle: Goldman Sachs was big on subprime mortgage bonds but reversed itself shortly before the collapse, avoiding a total disaster. Convenient timing for GS.
