Reykjavik Open (2011) Dedicated to the memory of Ingi Randver Johannsson, the 26th Reykjavik Open was a 166-player 9-round Swiss tournament held in the Reykjavik City Hall in Reykjavik, Iceland, 9-16 March 2011. It was organized by the Icelandic Chess Federation and the Reykjavik Chess Academy. Rounds 4 and 5 were both played on 12 March. Time control: 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, then 30 more minutes to the end of the game, with 30 seconds added per move from move 1. Prize fund: 20.500 USD. First prize: 5.000 USD, 2nd prize 3.000 USD, 3rd prize 1.800 USD. Tournament director and chief arbiter: Gunnar Bjornsson. Number of games played: 741. Yuriy Kuzubov won on tiebreak ahead of Sokolov and four other players with 7/9. The event also counted as the 53rd Nordic Championship, with Jon Ludvig Hammer as the winner. Mar-18-11    goodevans: It is commonplace for the host country to include some of its own players in tournaments that they would otherwise not qualify for. This happened recently in Tata Steel and The London Chess Classic. Personally, I can't see anything wrong with giving the nation's players opportunities they might not otherwise get to compete at a higher level. Once in the tournament, though, I would expect these players to be treated the same as the other competitors and without favour. For example, in a Swiss tournament such as Reykjavik it would not be appropriate to give the home players easier draws. I was surprised to see that as late as round 7 one of the tournament leaders, Hannes Stefansson, was paired with a <2358> player, around 200 points weaker than any of the other tournament leaders' opponents. I looked back a round to see that his round 6 opponent was rated only <1923>!
