 | | ray keene: <orbitkind> you asked about the fischer algebraic version of 60 memorable games and john nunn-nunn converted fischers book into algebraic for batsford-in the process he tried to improve on fischers notes to his game v i think bolbochan from the 1962 interzonal but in his improvement he left one sides king in check for several moves-which naturally outraged fischer. it was a famous case at the time. interestingly there is a parallel case with nunns algebraicisation of golombeks book on capablanca-in the notes to bogolyubov -capablanca new york 1924 nunn again tried to improve on a golombek note but what he suggested was a terrible blunder after which capa wd have had to resign! nunn is famous for checking his analysis by computer so i have no idea what went wrong in these cases. i guess we all make mistakes! when you write as much as nunn does something is bound to slip thru the net. |

 | | Sneaky: I can imagine Nunn making a mistake that leaves a king in check for several moves--that stuff happens to everybody. But what about the changes to the grammar that Fischer was so riled about on the radio interviews? One example I remember, Fischer wrote "so-and-so's plan backfired." It was changed to read "so-and-so's plan backfired against him." The added phrase "against him" is redundant and breaks every rule of concise, clear writing style. An editor's job is to take phrases like "against him" and scratch them out, not to insert them where they are utterly uncalled for! Imagine Mr. Keene, if you wrote in a book the phrase "Where is the counterplay?" and some editor changed it to "Where is the counterplay at?" I think you would find yourself a new editor immediately! |

 | | ray keene: <sneaky> i agree-algebraicisation of a book shd not include tampering with the language-unless its part of the change-for example in a note if the qr1 square is mentioned then change it to a1 by all means -but wholesale stylistic changes are ridiculous. nunn also did this with the golombek books on reti and capablanca also changing some chapter headings to make them sound silly in my view-no wonder fischer was outraged when his text was changed!
this is one reason i prefer to read golombeks reti and capa books in the original descriptive.we get the genuine golombek style-ditto fischers memorable games. |

Jun-08-05 | | uglybird: In his radio interviews Fischer accused Nunn of making not one change, as Keene erroneously thinks, but hundreds of changes to 60 Memorable Games. Not only were outrageous grammatical changes made, but also blatantly absurd analytical changes. Fischer detailed at least a dozen of these changes by first reading from the original 60 Memorable Games and then reading from Nunn's butchered algebraic version. One example that come to mind is Nunn changing Fischer's "And Black wins the bishop pair" to "and Black wins a pawn". Another, is a change from Fischer's "Black mates shortly" to "Black mates next move". The changes were of course made to make algebraic readers of Fischer think that he was stupid. Not Dr. Nunn's best effort to say the least. |

 | | ray keene: <uglybird>. of course you are right about the numerous changes-i think jimmy adams listed them all in chess magazine -or maybe it was winter-but the one that stuck in my mind was the king in check blunder-that was worthy of retiring to a monastery !! |
Jun-11-05 | | vonKrolock: On the Fischer vs Bolbochan game, it seems that the mistake allegedly introduced in the Batsford edition is found already in the Russian books "744 Partii Bobi Fishera" and "Moi 60 pamyatnikh partii" (appearing resp. in 1993 and 1972) - E. Winter presents the fac-similes in both cases in his on-line article "Fischer's Fury" <Fischer <...> hundreds of changes>: March 10th 1999 - in a radio interview, commenting the count that detected 570 changes, Fischer - in his usual distempered manner- claimed for: <‘thousands upon thousands and thousands and thousands of changes’> More details in the above mentioned article |

Jun-13-05 | | Nezhmetdinov: I DO NOT agree with Nunn's plan for the world championship - my objections may be summarised as follows: Notwithstanding AVRO (because AA died) The WCC HAS ALWAYS BEEN A MATCHPLAY CHAMPIONSHIP for God's sake!!!! If we make it a tournament then tournament results will be bloody banged on about by the anti-Kramnik/anti-whoever crowd even more than they already are. Grrrr! IT IS BOLLOCKS AND ANTI THE SPIRIT OF THE WCC. Aside from that I have always enjoyed Dr. Nunn's books and games. |

Jun-13-05 | | OneBadDog: Will an unsullied version of My 60 Memorable Games ever be reprinted? |
Jun-23-05 | | Heavy Metal Thunder: He must be punished for his crimes against RJF. |
Jun-24-05 | | Mitch Mitchell: Nunns books are terrific. I have the updated golombek book, I have the original Fischer book. Whats a typo here and there? Anyway, anything that bothers fischer has to be good for a laff or three. A lot of bright people seem to have that glint in their eyes. Very few Grandmasters look like Seven Eleven clerks. Nunn finished college at what, age 14, and had his doctorate at age 18? Not bad! I think I had figured out how to set the clock on the VCR at that age.... |
Jun-25-05 | | vonKrolock: In the recent "European Chess Solving Championship" in Poland, Nunn was 4th place individually and Great Britain's team 2th : tables and results http://www.geocities.com/solvingche... - they dont' presents the compositions that the participants had to solve, but from some other events we can find the programs (Problems & Solutions) |

Jun-30-05 | | OneBadDog: <A lot of bright people seem to have that glint in their eyes. Very few Grandmasters look like Seven Eleven clerks.> Oh, really? Have you ever seen any pictures of Roman Dzindzichashvili? |
Jul-04-05 | | Nezhmetdinov: Is nobody on this site interested in what Dr. John has to say about the WCC? Isn't it the most important issue off-the-board for chess?? Why does no-one seem to care? |
Jul-04-05 | | Mitch Mitchell: Nunn is a smart guy, but he has no influence on FIDE. Why not read the Op-Ed in the London Times, for more good kibitzing? FIDE runs this yearly tournament to maximize their income, by taking a percentage of match bids from different countries. They'd probably have the tournament every 4 months, if they could.... |
Jul-04-05 | | OneBadDog: I'm sorry, Nunns opinions about the WCC do interest me, it's just that I don't see the issue being resolved anytime soon. There are are number of good suggestions regarding picking a WC-people need to pick one and roll with it. |
Aug-05-05 | | Orbitkind: Nunn is a prat if he is arrogant enough to change the language when translating from descriptive to algebraic. I also don't like it when Nunn updates a book and it says on the cover "written by [someone like Tal] and John Nunn". I don't like Nunn's assertion that a tournament is the way that chess championships will have to be ran now. I think a tournament as a qualifier and then a proper head to head match is needed in a 2 year cycle. |
Aug-31-05 | | RookFile: Nunn generally writes excellent books.
However, he did a lousy job with "My 60 Memorable Games", in one case, changing Fischer's analysis to give a winning line for white -- the only problem being that the line illegally leaves the white king in check for a couple of moves. And this is not even a typo, either -- it's clear it's just an oversight on Nunn's part.
I mean, this would be understandable,
(I guess) if he was doing the analysis on his own -- but he's already got Fischer's correct analysis in front of him! |

Sep-19-05 | | FHBradley: <Heavy Metal Thunder: He must be punished for his crimes against RJF.> Is that a criminal offence in Sweden, crime against Fischer? |
Nov-10-05 | | sharpnova: nunn's rejection of the 3/1/0 proposal for chess scoring was absolutly ridiculous. it's quite obvious he simply rejected it in favor of his own formula.. therefore it's an "ego" issue.. and immediately his proposal falls under that type of criticism. what a fool. his rejection followed this basic logic: "this is not a good method to avoid draws because in the scenario where players tried to beat the system, those who played decisive games would score higher than those who drew" oh.. i see.. so nunn really just wants to help the drawniks afterall. |
Nov-17-05 | | AlexanderMorphy: he is very good at solving problems as far as i know...i am not too sure about him as a player... |
Nov-17-05 | | KingG: <AlexanderMorphy> <i am not too sure about him as a player...> I think he was one of the best players in the world in the late 80's. He finished 3rd in one of the World Cups during the 80's. I'm not sure what his official ranking was, but Chessmetrics has him at number 10 in the world in September 1985. |
Nov-17-05 | | AlexanderMorphy: sorry i think you mis-understood me...what i meant to say is that i'm not too familiar with him, not that he isn't a good chess player.<kingG> |
Nov-17-05 | | KingG: <AlexanderMorphy> Ok, sorry about that. |

Nov-17-05 | | AlexanderMorphy: no problem mate |
