 | | perfidious: <arifattar: Why is Beer more popular than Vodka?> As we poker players say, that depends......
Kahlua's more my thing, especially with a nip of vodka on the side. No beer or wine for this barbarian! <JoergWalter: <ketchuplover> an overall record of 45% is not a reputation for lecturing about success in chess and how to achieve it.> Do you really believe you'd fare better against the level of opposition here, or that there aren't a lot of games missing from this page? There's more to it than meets the eye: think about it. |
|
May-27-11 | | JoergWalter: <perfidious> offers for online chess training - there are plenty and most claim to have excellent training materials and proven "secret" and/or "scientific" methods for success, which then is almost only a matter of paying the fees.
there are many ways to fleece chess amateurs and aspiring talents. |

 | | perfidious: <JoergWalter> No doubt you're right about that, as in any other performance-based field. There are likely players not even my strength putting it out that they know how to train you to raise your level of play. My point here was simply that whilst Smirnov's score in this DB is indeed only 45%, he made GM somehow, and some of the players he's lost to here are very strong. When I was active, I wouldn't have scored as well as he. |

Please, don't get me wrong but this guy is advertising this on "how to beat titled players":
<Pretty often, a weaker player wins against a stronger opponent. Again, it means that it is possible to do. The question is “HOW can you do it?”. How can you beat a titled player or a player whose rating is 100-200 points higher than yours?> and also he writes
<Actually, I wasn’t going to share this information with a huge audience. I’ve had doubts about whether or not I should give such a powerful chess weapon to everyone. After all, I am also a titled player, and I don’t want everyone to be able to beat me!> Well, did he sell his secrets to his opponents before playing them?
or should one buy his opponents systems?
you know, selling winning systems in casino gambling follows a similar pattern of cheap salesman talk. it gives additional income to the sellers but won't make you a casinos nightmare. |
|
May-28-11 | | JoergWalter: <perfidious> imagine 2 players who follow his teachings perfectly will play a game. they, of course cannot both win at the same time?!? the only winner is the talented guy who collected the enrollment fee. welcome to the club! |

May-31-11 | | jpsingh: Well friends, FIDE site lists 38 games of GM Igor Smirnov, UKR (2007-2008) where GM Igor wins 13 games, draws 21 games and looses only 4 games. Please see http://ratings.fide.com/view_games.... That gives a better picture. He is just 23 years at present, so most of the chessgames.com games are of the time when he was quite young. For a review of his courses visit http://chessthinkingsystems.blogspo... |
|
Jun-01-11 | | JoergWalter: <jpsingh> here is what GM Igor writes: <"Full advantage of GM Igor's courses can be taken after watching his video lectures several times and solving all the exercises. But if you can give 2-3 hours daily to GM Igor's courses, they can take your FIDE rating to 2300 easily in 2-3 years. GM Igor's chess knowledge is no doubt superb">
And though GM Igor was in doubt to give his secrets away to the public (see his statement in my post above), he is now rushing his sales:
<"Also, for a limited period, GM Igor Smirnov is at present offering a heavy discount of US $80 on purchase of all the six courses together as a full chess training package (or purchases of $300 or more at a time"> |
|
Jun-01-11 | | jpsingh: Education (even in chess) can only polish your talent, it can't create one. So, if equally educated players will play, more talented will win. You will rarely find a GM who does not have an original style of chess in him. |
|
Jun-01-11 | | JoergWalter: talent is important but very rare. where are the talented instructors?
or at least the well prepared instructors?
on http://chessthinkingsystems.blogspo... in his first video on "breaking stereotypes" GM Igor discusses the famous Winter vs. Capablanca game, Hastings 1919 wherein the white QB gets cut off from the game.
According to Capablanca in his "chess fundamentals" after 8.Bg5 h6 9.Bh4 the trap c6-c5 allowing Nd5 was fatal. in his words: " White falls into the trap. Only lack of experience can account for this move. White should have considered that a player of my experience and strength could never allow such a move if it were good." GM Igor does not address this at all if I remember correctly.
Finally, the board position at the end where he says black plays b5 and wins is not correct. Black played b5 when the c pawn was on c6 and not on c7. (the moves 21.b3 c6 22. Ra2 are missing I guess). |

Jun-03-11 | | jpsingh: What is WOK set?? |
|
Jun-03-11 | | jpsingh: Overall record of GM Igor Smirnov at FIDE site
http://ratings.fide.com/chess_stati... looks quite impressive - 117 games (57 won, 48 drawn, only 12 lost) |
|
Jun-03-11 | | JoergWalter: chinese cooking device. offered in those very "entertaining" TV commercials: you buy one - get a second for free etc. etc.. |
|
Jun-17-11 | | snits: Re: Smirnov's record

Aug-31-13 | | jancotianno: Has anyone here bought any of his courses and know if they are actually any good? |
|
Sep-03-13 | | jancotianno: I can't help feeling that it's a scam. |
|
Sep-03-13 | | dx9293: I have his courses and I like them. The best way to get a feeling for whether you will like his materials or not is to watch his youtube videos (he has a lot of them). If you like those, try one course. If you like that course, try others. I found his materials interesting and helpful for my chess thinking, but it may not be that way for someone else. |
|
May-11-14 | | ralph46: Being a good chess coach is not equivalent to being a great tournament player. For ex MARK DVORETZKI who is a great coach wrote some great books about chess training was never a real great tournament player. You cannot judge someones coaching abilities by tournament results. Anyhow there is not a single coach that his system fits everyone . Even a good master player can teach youngsters a lot. You do not have to be a famous grandmaster in order to be able to coach/ |
