EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

< Earlier Kibitzing  · PAGE 24 OF 83 ·  Later Kibitzing>
Sep-06-16  Nf3em: May panalo bd 1 & 3, drsawinsh na yung 2 & 4.

3-1 amoy na.

Sep-06-16  pinoymaster77: Draw na JP, while winning na AFGM as usual sa endgame, the Maestro! Sana win din GM Ino
Sep-06-16  kamagong24: GM Torre, Eugenio 2447 vs IM Kobese, Watu 2350

the master giving a lesson on endgame technique!

:)

Sep-06-16  gopi11: Wesley, Eugene, Frayna, Secopito and Mendoza won their respective matches. I want to see more wins today!
Sep-06-16  Nf3em: Wala nang talo Team PHL, 2.5 - 1.5 ang worst score jan.
Sep-06-16  pinoymaster77: Whoa, lakas ng India na ah! They beat host Azerbaijan! At top board battle of Hydra GMs, Harikrishna inflicted the 1st loss of GM Mamedyarov. GM Adhiban drew with GM Radjabov and again the youthful GM Vidit won again, this time vs GM Naiditsch for the match win! So far eh 2.5 to 0.5

Ukraine is winning at the top table vs China. Yu lost while Elijanov winning vs Wang Yue. Draw na Wei Yi while slightly ahead si Ding

Sep-06-16  pinoymaster77: Possible sa next round 6 eh Ukraine vs Netherlands and USA vs India, or yun ang top 4 kung paano man ang rambulan
Sep-06-16  Virgil A: Tapos na pala ang boksing. Malufet talaga si GM. Talbos sa endgame si Kobe.
Sep-06-16  pinoymaster77: What can we say, at age 64 eh TOP scorer si AFGM Euge with 4.5/5 !!

He's showing the way and providing leadership to the team

Sep-06-16  Pru: PHI vs. Norway sa mens, possibly GM Ino vs. Magnus Carlsen, and GM Eugene vs. 17 year old Aryan Tari. PHI vs. Mexico naman sa womens.
Sep-06-16  Virgil A: We may have something very special going here. GM Torre spearheading the team to a board 3 results of 4.5/5 and the team to 4/5 . And GM Julio may face the WC Carlsen in the next round. That's a good opportunity. And a chance to have an amazing result at the conclusion of the games.

Payt !

Sep-06-16  gokusano: Maraming "PAYT!!!!"
Sep-06-16  epistle: Catas vs. the Orange Juice! What a fluid game!
Sep-06-16  spawn2: Team Philippines is now occupying the 23rd spot (original seeding is 53rd). Rest day today which will give our chess heroes time to rest and prepare for the final push in the last 6 rounds. Team Captain Infiesto will also have the time to craft the team's strategy in consultation with the players vs. the Carlsen led Norway.

On the women's side, the Flipinas are also doing well. Currently at 27th place vs their orginal seeding of 46th.

Sep-06-16  wordfunph: GM Eugene "Maong Lang Nakupas" Torre for 2018 Batumi Olympiad!

4.5/5 whoaaa!

Sep-06-16  spawn2: Let's take advantage baka last Olympiad na

http://www.philstar.com/sports/2016...

Sep-06-16  allan.dinglasan: Yahoo, sapol prediction ko!
Hold lang si Carlsen, 2-2 could be a decent result for RP.

Eugene vs Carlsen? Why not! let us relive his 1976 strength when smashed reigning champ Anatoly Karpov!

Sep-06-16  wordfunph: Rewind!

Philippines vs Norway

1994 Moscow: 3.5-0.5
1992 Manila: 1-3
1976 Haifa: 2.5-1.5
1972 Skopje: 1.5-2.5
1970 Siegen: 1-3
1964 Te Aviv: 2-2
1958 Munich: 2.5-1.5

Sep-06-16  Pulo y Gata: Ino who will win in bd 1, but don't ask me!
Sep-06-16  pinoymaster77: Mens nga nasa 23rd, ranked 53rd vs 12th seed Norway. Pero yung top 2 boards nga matibay. GM Hammer eh 5/5 for draws, that is an indication for JP. Sa boards 3 and 4 nga may potential and these are probably young Norse GMs vs our veteran GMs

India scored a shock vs host Azeris with a big thrashing, they're showing their top 10 finish in 2014 was no fluke. They have so many 'little Anands' now reaping the harvest from their decades old extensive chess program. Sa pag resume bukas eh bakbakan ng Ukraine vs USA and India vs Netherlands !

Our 53rd ranked Womens team eh 27th na and will be going up vs 57th ranked Mexico. Kaya na naman nila eto, pero wala palang WGM sa top board, kulang pa sa quota si WIM Frayna, anyway may 5 rounds pa after that. Expecting na SAME line-up (kasama WFM Shania) coming off a SHUTOUT win.

Mga undefeated Russia and Ukraine mag clash sa top board ng Women

Sep-06-16  pinoymaster77: Checked out GM Vidit Santosh Gujrathi 2669 of India, born 1994 pala and 21 yrs old. Grabe 5/5 sya searing hot and biggest win so far eh he won over GM Naiditsch of Azerbaijan. At top board GM Harikrishna took the measure of GM Mamedyarov

Hindi pa India vs USA, Netherlands muna, it will be GM Giri vs GM Harikrishna sa top board

Sep-06-16  Iskubadayb: Pulo, Ju no who will win in bd 1?
Sep-06-16  Nf3em:

Rest day pala today. Musta sa lahat!

Sep-06-16  Virgil A: It's 7am in Baku right now. Hoping the Pride of Philippines would sleep in this morning on their rest day.
Sep-06-16  Viktorerro: May distinct swagger advantage si Manguso Matalinao Sarrado sa Bd 1 ng Phil vs Norway...rest day palang advantage na...pag upo na pag upo sa otb battle, papatak na ang juice ng advantage...
