EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Sep-03-16  Pru: PHI vs. Nigeria sa Mens, siguro pagkakataon ng ipahinga si AFGM. PHI vs. India naman sa womens.
Sep-03-16  Iskubadayb: If Eugene is rested in the third round, he will be so fresh in the 4th that it's like he is just starting the games yet perfectly warmed up and prepped for battle. There's a big difference if he plays the 3rd round. He will feel the wear and tear after the game, and even if he is rested the next day, fatigue can quickly creep up especially if he is having a tough game in the 5th round. That could ruin the rest of the games.

The team has a duty to keep The Legend optimized and at a premium. This is Mr Olympiad, for crying out loud. A legend in these games! We gotta take care of him. Plus, when he plays well, the team always plays well. He also has a realistic chance of winning a medal on board 3. I think that should be our main objective because it is quite realistic.

I'm pretty sure everyone in the know passes by the Pinoy table to get a peek at Mr. Olympiad.

Sep-03-16  cro777: Torre's London line (5.dxc5) was a riddle for the former Paraguayan champion.

The most effective opening line is the one you know better than your opponent.

Eugenio Torre – GM Jose Fernando Cubas (2470)

1. d4 d5 2. Nf3 Nf6 3. Bf4 c5 4. e3 Nc6

click for larger view

Here Cubas probably expected the main line 5.c3 he has experience with.

Instead, Torre chose his favorite 5. dxc5!?, although this line is in theory considered to be "dodgy" (Black simply answers 5…e6! followed by …Bxc5).

Cubas was in a less known territory and his idea to meet Torre's challenge by fianchettoing the dark-squared bishop (5…g6?) proved itsef wrong. Later on he tried an unsound attack.

5… g6 6. Bb5 Bg7 7. O-O Ne4 8. Ne5 O-O 9. Bxc6 bxc6 10. Nxc6 Qe8 11. Qxd5 Bb7 12. Qxe4 Bxc6 13. Qb4

click for larger view

13… f5? <the immediate 13…e5 followed by …Rb8 was necessary> 14.Nc3 e5 15. Bg3 g5?

click for larger view

This attack was unsound and after Torre's sangfroid defence (16.f3! followed by Qc4+) Cubas found himself in a clearly lost position.

Sep-03-16  Virgil A: Very insightful thoughts from both Masters here. Master Iskubadayb wrote about team strategy and Master cro777 wrote about the win of GM Torre today. Thanks!
Sep-03-16  Virgil A: After 2 rounds there are more decisive games than draws by 3:1 ratio. That may come down some in the later rounds as the pairings will pit more teams with comparable strength.
Sep-03-16  Virgil A: Baku is experiencing the best weather these days. Cloudy all day with 80's during the day and 70's at night. Conducive for a walk in the park. Conducive for a good night sleep.
Sep-03-16  Iskubadayb: Bubz, it's been awhile. I'm pretty sure JP and Barce are itching to redeem themselves against the Nigerians. Sado and Paulo already have their byes so it just makes sense to let The Legend hit the gym tomorrow.

I wanted to express added agreement with Cro, but I just can't... I can't agree more! :)

Sep-03-16  Virgil A: < I wanted to express added agreement with Cro, but I just can't... I can't agree more! :) >

Haha. That's a novelty!

TN of the Master Iskubadayb. :)

Cro is spot on as always.

Sep-03-16  Virgil A: As much as I am delighted by the win of GM Torre over a strong GM today, I'm not jumping for joy since it's a team competition. Paraguay this time upended team Philippines 2.5 - 1.5 after years of ending up on the short end with wins in boards 2 and 4, and drawing in board 1.

The Philippine team played to their best today. I am cheering for our team.

Sep-03-16  Virgil A: Considering the city of Baku is located at the shores of the Caspian Sea, it's a certainty that there's a seafood restaurant at just about every corner. Fresh seafood. No wonder GM Torre likes it in Baku. Together with a couple of light beers and it's another beautiful day. :)
Sep-03-16  pinoymaster77: Usually the practice is to rest the player who has lost. Dependa din yan sa 'team huddle' as consulted by the Team Captain, lets see this hapon ano line-up vs Nigeria. Definitely IM Pau will get a chance to play again, but question is who will be rested?

Sa Womens WFM Shania would probably play her very 1st Olympiad game, and WNM Bernales gets a rest

Sep-03-16  Iskubadayb: Aye, I am quite aware of that very flawed system. They play you to the ground if you keep scoring and stick you under the bench if you are drawing blanks. I was a victim of that, too. It is so anti-logic. In a tournament of closely rated players, it is very rare for anyone to win or lose in succession! It is just normal that you get a letdown after a win, and you are pumped after a loss... in any sports. That's why I do not understand why we keep on sticking to this practice that has failed forever.

There's always a time for change. :)

Sep-03-16  Iskubadayb: Olive can attest to that. Oh, how he can so attest to that system. Remember in the last Olympiad? He kept winning his early games, he won his first four games straight then lost his fifth game and was basically demoted to a water boy the rest of the games! I was so pissed on how the rotation was handled especially because everyone was playing great chess! They had a realistic chance of winning the Olympiad in that one!
Sep-03-16  pinoymaster77: Iskuba,
That could be in the 2012 Olympiad, for the case of IM Dimaks.

In 2014, GM Oli no longer played, it was virtually this same time, except for GM Jay's late sub for GM Banjo who couldn't make it to Norway then.

For the line-ups, up to the discussions malamang nila TC James, AFGM Euge and GM Jay siguro

Sep-03-16  pinoymaster77: BTW, we have to note and thank Atty Raul Canobas / NCFP BOD for arranging those uniforms. They look nice, and AFGM Euge wore it during the press conference with Susan, and team players and officials always wear at least the jacket during the games.

Sa upper left may Phil flag and sa right eh Baku Olympiad. May ibang logos presumably for PSC and NCFP.

Mga pics din ng Women players and GM Jay while waiting for the last game to finish by WIM Perena-Secopito eh showing the PHI jacket, maganda ngang tingnan na pare-pareho for team unity and recognition of NATIONAL team duties

Sep-03-16  Iskubadayb: Si Dimaks nga, 2012 pala yun? Si Jay na naman ba ang kapitan? Ubaws tayo.
Sep-03-16  spawn2: <MIsku>

Team captain for the Men's team is James Infiesto from Davao.

After the defeat against Paraguay, Men's Team are on 50th place right now. More chess to come and am pretty sure they will claw their way up to a much better placing in the next rounds. Di pa masyado nagiinit sila Ino, JP and Barce. Si Genius eh mainit na kaya pwede na mapahinga this round. It will give GMs JP and Banjo the opportunity to bounce back against lower rated opponents. Si Pau nangangati na mga kamay tumulak ng piyesa. 3 - 1 or 3.5 - .5 prediction ko for this round.

Sep-03-16  spawn2: Kahit anong plano mo talaga na bigyan ng equal distribution mga players to play white and black pieces eh talagang may tatamaan. If Banjo will play on the 3rd board against Nigeria, it will be his third straight game to play black. Although do you count his first game against a significantly lower rated opponent?

It is possible that because of this, he will be rested? One of the things that is very interesting to follow and predict is how the team decides which players to field based on different factors.

Sep-04-16  Iskubadayb: I am just hoping that the peeps who run the team grasp the standing of GM Torre in the Olympiad. This is not just any player, this is Mr. Olympiad, the record holder! Just by showing up, he brings honor to the Philippines. What is our objective in this Olympiad.... top 40... top 30? Does anyone remember who made top 40 the last time? My point is, as long as Euge is playing, he should be the objective. He deserves it for all the honors he brought, and is still bringing to the country.
Sep-04-16  Iskubadayb: On a lighter note, can you imagine if I was running the show? Euge will be treated like a royalty, which he truly deserves. I'd even assign a GM just to take care of his every need. I'll run him to the ground during training, though... but he expects that. :)
Sep-04-16  Nf3em: waaaaaaaaaaaaaa talo pala kagabi ... sayans. Bawi PHL Team!

Ako naman eto masama ang tyan at nag withdraw na lang ako sa rapids. I cannot play with this condition -- pwede pa yung may hangover pero kung ganito, hala!

Sep-04-16  pinoymaster77: SURPRISED to see na si GM Ino ang pina rest? Mukhang ang diskarte eh pag higher ranked saka paglalaruin sa top board si GM Ino?

Bo. 87 Nigeria (NGR) Rtg - 53 Philippines (PHI) Rtg 0 : 0 26.1 FM Kigigha, Bomo 2340 - GM Gomez, John Paul2492

26.2 FM Anwuli Daniel,2336 - GM Torre, Eugenio2447

26.3 IM Adu, Oladapo2334 - GM Barcenilla, Rogelio 2455

26.4 CM Adesina, Adeyinka2259 - IMBersamina,Paulo 2408

Sep-04-16  spawn2: Mahiwaga talaga ang fielding ng players natin. Di ko makita ang logic hehehe. GMs JP and Banjo playing with the black pieces again for the 3rd time if am not mistaken. I commend both players for giving their full cooperation with the team captain's decision.
Sep-04-16  Virgil A: Eyes on Kap James. He's probably reserving Julio for the latter rounds.
Sep-04-16  spawn2: Is it going to be another variation of the London System in 3rd round or something entirely new to surprise the opponent?

8 minutes to go..
